My father used the biblical language, believed the Bible message about the poor, the outcaste, the anti-war sections. He followed Tillich with his ground of being notion, Kierkegaard's "Leap of Faith" and importantly, the social gospel of Reinhold Niebuhr. He didn't believe in a creator god or afterlife. Doing good deeds to go to heaven is like a dog performing tricks...nothing noble in that for Rev. James Kenneth Powell.
