The UK government has announced plans to ban under-16s from using certain social media platforms from Spring 2027, with tougher age checks and wider restrictions on features like livestreaming and messaging strangers.
On the surface, it’s easy to understand why people support it. Social media can be addictive, overwhelming and in some cases, harmful. A lot of parents are exhausted by the pressure of trying to manage it alone.
But then comes the bigger question: can you actually ban kids from social media?
How would it be enforced? What happens to privacy if everyone has to prove their age online? Do young people just move to less visible spaces? And does a ban fix the real problem, or let platforms avoid deeper changes to how their systems are designed?
