In this video I discuss the dangers of relativism and how if you are for social justice you have to be against the ideology of relativism.
Summary of some of the ideas in the video:
The agnostic says you can’t know the truth. Yet the mindset is self-defeating because it claims to know at least one truth: that you can’t know truth.
Examples:
“You cant know anything for sure”
"Do you know that for sure?"
“True for you but not for me”
Response: Is that statement true just for you, or is it true for everyone?
Example: Try saying that to a police officer after you're been pulled over for speeding or the IRS after not paying taxes for 5 years in a row.
1. Relativism is a self contradictory view point and should therefore be rejected as false. - Its like me telling you right now that I cant speak a word of english or no sentences are longer that 5 words. The relativist believes that relativism is true not just for himself, but for everyone. So ask your relativistic friends. "Is relativism absolutely true for everyone?
2. The relativist slogan "thats true for you but not for me"- presupposes that relativism applies to at least two people.
Any claim that a relativist makes can be turned into an objective truth claim that is obviously true for all people.
EXAMPLES:
"It is true that..." there is no truth
"It is true for me and you that ..." truth is relative to the person
"It is true and not false that ..." no one has the truth
"It is absolutely true that there are no absolute truths"
"It is objectively true and not false that all cultures have their own values"
3. Relativism does not allow room for true moral absolutes in ethics.
