During her groundbreaking career, Dorothea Lange made some of the most iconic photography of the 20th century. Her unique ability to discover and reveal the character and resilience of those she photographed set her apart.
Join us as we follow Washington, D.C. artist and native Dee Dwyer’s journey in attempting to recreate the emotion and impact of Lange's memorable photographs in her own work.
As Dwyer pursues documentary and portrait photography on the vibrant streets of Washington, her lens captures the heart and soul of the Anacostia community where she grew up.
Inspired by Lange's storytelling, Dee crafts portraits that resonate with the struggles and triumphs of single mothers, drawing poignant parallels to Lange's legendary Migrant Mother.
Dorothea Lange: Seeing People is on view until March 31, 2024, in our West Building. Featuring some 100 photographs, the exhibition addresses Lange’s innovative approaches to picturing people, emphasizing her work on social issues including economic disparity, migration, poverty, and racism.
