Can Mandarin speakers understand Cantonese - with and without subtitles?
In this episode of the Mutual Intelligibility Challenge, a Cantonese speaker describes a word only in Cantonese, and Mandarin speakers try to identify the Mandarin equivalent.
The challenge happens in two stages:
Round 1: listening only (no written support)
Round 2: the Cantonese description appears on screen
This allows us to see what changes when written language is introduced — and where understanding actually comes from.
This video is part of a new Chinese series on the channel.
The episode was originally planned as multiple words, but due to the complexity of Chinese captioning, the words are being released as separate videos.
If you speak Mandarin (or are learning it), you can play along and compare your own guesses between the two rounds.
