Can Innovation Save the Chesapeake’s Sinking Islands?
Smith Island and Tangier Island are more than just landmarks; they are the front lines of the climate crisis in the Chesapeake Bay.
As sea levels rise, these historic crabbing and fishing communities face an existential threat that jeopardizes both their cultural heritage and the regional economy. To combat this, restoration efforts are shifting toward transforming these islands into hubs for global research on coastal resilience and erosion control.
"We think that we can play a role in drawing national and international attention to the islands... bringing resources to make them living laboratories for coastal erosion strategies," says Hilary Harp Falk, President and CEO of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
By testing and scaling new coastal protection technologies on these islands, the region aims to create a repeatable blueprint for protecting vulnerable shorelines worldwide.
