Did you know that 16th century martial arts apply perfectly well to self-defense with a baseball bat (or other improvised weapon)? The "peasant staff" of German civil servant and fencer Paulus Hector Mair is a simple club, but wielded with skill instead of brute force.

The parries, displacements, and counters are definitely usable with various blunt implements, from tree branches to sticks/staves, and even tools like shovels. With an understanding of footwork, distance management, timing, and deflections these can be quite effective.

So let's take a closer look at a few of the tactics and maneuvers shown in Mair's manuscript, and how they translate to a more modern setting.
