Can Diss Tracks REALLY End Careers?:

Diss tracks have been a staple in hip hop for almost as long as the genre itself has been around. Becoming popular in the '80s, rap beefs with back and forth diss tracks have lasted all the way up until today, with people even claiming that these songs have the power to end careers... but is this actually true?

In this video, I'm gonna take a look at some of the most well known rap beefs throughout different eras and see if any one of those heated battles contained a diss track that has ended the opposing rapper's career. Here's a quick preview of the beefs we'll discuss in the video...

~ Eminem Vs. MGK ~

On September 3rd 2018, Machine Gun Kelly released his Eminem diss track titled "Rap Devil", after Eminem had taken some shots at him on his Kamikaze album for some inappropriate remarks MGK made about his daughter some years ago, among other things.

Eminem, not being one to back down from a fight, replied with the even more popular and well received Killshot just 11 days later. Beefing with one of the biggest rappers in the world is a risky move, but did this affect MGK's career to the point of no return?

~ Eminem Vs. Benzino ~

In 2002, tensions would start to rise between Eminem & Benzino, after Em's 2002 album "The Eminem Show" received a lower rating in The Source than he would've liked (a magazine which was co-owned by Benzino). Eminem voiced these frustrations, which led to Benzino releasing his Eminem diss track titled "Lift Your Skirt Up", followed later on by another one: "I Don't Wanna".

Eminem didn't take very kindly to this, and fired back with 3 intense diss tracks of his own; "Invasion", "The Sauce" & "Nail In the Coffin". There were quite a few more tracks released after this from both parties, but the first few diss tracks were really where this one peaked. The real question is, were these first 3 tracks enough to put the nail in the coffin for Benzino's career?

~ Drake Vs. Meek Mill ~

Meek kicked this one off by firing ghostwriting accusations towards Drake with his Twitter fingers. Drake stayed quiet on social media, instead opting to release his diss track "Charged Up" to respond to Meek, following up with the iconic "Back to Back" before Meek even had a chance to reply to the first diss with a song of his own.

Even worse, when Meek DID reply, it was with the relatively flimsy track "Wanna Know". It wasn't looking good for Meek, but was this enough to push his reputation in the rap game past the point of no return?

~ 50 Cent Vs. Ja Rule ~

Starting in 1999, this is one of the longest running hip hop beefs to ever exist as it is still going on to this day. Many tracks materialised from the feud over the years; 50 Cent's "Life's On the Line", "I Smell P****", "Back Down" & "Hail Mary", and Ja Rule's "Loose Change" & "Guess Who Shot Ya". It was a heated battle indeed. Ja was determined as being the loser of this one, but were the diss tracks the primary reason for his fall off?

~ KRS-One Vs. MC Shan ~

And last but not least, we have one of the original hip hop beefs from the '80s: The Bridge Wars between Boogie Down Productions and The Juice Crew.

BDP was led by KRS-One, and, while Juice Crew was led by Marley Marl, MC Shan was the Juice Crew MC who was most involved in the battle and took the most damage as a result of it. The most notable track from this feud, KRS-One's "The Bridge Is Over", is one of the most iconic hip hop diss tracks to be released, and the fact that people from MC Shan's borough in New York were bumping it? That's got to sting.

So, it begs the question... did the diss tracks here ultimately result in the end of MC Shan's career?
