I put today's leading deepfake detection tools to the test, and the ways they failed reveal a lot about how the industry is getting deepfakes totally wrong .
Since 2024, nearly $900 million has been lost to AI deepfake scams. An 82-year-old retiree lost $690,000 to a fake Elon Musk crypto scam. An engineering firm lost $25 million to a real-time deepfake of their CFO on a Zoom call. The problem is exploding faster than anyone can solve it.
So I tested the best detection technology available today against three levels of challenges: viral deepfakes from the wild, a fully AI-cloned version of myself trained from scratch, and a subtle "microfake" so small even humans would miss it.
As AI gets better at faking reality, can these tools actually keep up? Or are we entering a world where truth itself has a price tag?
