I lost a hammer in my garden for two years and when I finally found it, it was properly rusted. Instead of reaching for sandpaper or a grinder, I wondered what effect ultrasonic cleaning would have on something this far gone.
In this video I test an ultrasonic cleaner on a heavily rusted tool to see whether it is a genuine rust removal method or just another workshop myth. What starts as a slightly silly experiment quickly turns into a useful lesson for restoration work.
This is especially relevant for restoring old tools, metal parts, and the metal shielding found in consoles and retro computers, where sanding can often make things look worse or remove material you want to keep. Will ultrasonic cleaning actually help here, or is it wishful thinking?
