Is Tommaso Campanella’s “The City of the Sun” merely a utopia—or a blueprint for a society based on common ownership, control over the family, astrology, eugenics, and rule by an elite of “wise men”?
In 1602, in a cell beneath Castel Sant’Elmo in Naples, Tommaso Campanella—a Dominican monk, philosopher, and rebel—wrote one of the strangest books of the Renaissance. In it, he describes an ideal city divided into seven circles and governed by priests and scholars, where no one owns anything, children are planned according to astrology, and knowledge is written on the walls.
At first glance, it is a philosophical utopia. But when we trace how the ideas from “The City of the Sun” reappear among the Rosicrucians, in Johann Valentin Andreae’s “Christianopolis,” in the Oneida Community, in eugenics programs, and in modern planned societies, the question becomes far more uncomfortable.
Are utopias merely dreams?
Or are they mirrors in which every age sees the society it may one day begin to build?
