Camila Mora has played with Hayley Kiyoko, Ashe, FINNEAS, Broods, Julia Michaels, Lorde, and Olivia Rodrigo. In this interview with Adriana Balic, for her Berklee Online course, Keyboards for Live Performance: Techniques and Technology, Mora discusses getting her first touring gig right between her junior and senior year at the University of Southern California Thornton School’s Popular Music program. Incidentally, that school is where she met Adriana Balic, when Mora was a student in Balic’s keyboard proficiency class. Balic recounts: “She graduated in 2017, and two years later she was playing keys and singing background in Julia Michaels’s band, who was opening for P!NK's Beautiful Trauma tour, where I was playing in P!NK's band on keys! She went from student to tour mate.”

ABOUT ADRIANA BALIC:

Adriana Balic has toured the world as a member of popstar P!NK’s band since 2003, on keys, backing vocals, and guitar. In November 2019, Balic completed P!NK’s Beautiful Trauma World Tour, which broke records, playing to more than 3 million people and making it the 10th highest grossing tour in Billboard Boxscore’s history. Balic’s media credits include “Saturday Night Live,” Apple Music, “Top of the Pops,” iHeartRadio Live, and “American Idol.” Other artists Balic has played with include Gwen Stefani, Wrabel, Sheila E., Brenda Russell, Chris Stapleton, Peabo Bryson, and the US National Touring Theater Production of “Jersey Boys.” She plays Roland keyboards and is a Roland Artist. What is enharmonic equivalency? Well, you may have noticed that C♯ and D♭ are the same black key note on the piano keyboard. Just like D♯ and E♭ are also the same note. In fact, every note has at least two different letter names for the same sound. This is enharmonic equivalency! Enharmonic notes sound the same but have different note names. So when should you choose to use C♯ instead of D♭? It’s not just an arbitrary choice. It’s dependent on its context. Just like in the English language, we have homonyms—words with completely different meanings may sound the same (for example: the words “dye” and “die”), but people can understand the meaning of these words because of the context in which the words are used. The more you’ll learn about harmony, and practice your theory exercises, the more clear these choices will become, to the point where you won’t even have to think about it. This 23-video course (which also features special guest Alper Tuzcu) delves into the process of pre-production and production of a song, paying close attention to its structure, elements, and managing your DAW. When you first begin work on a song, it is important to think about duration, number of bars per section, repetition, and the possible modification of tempo and key. As you go from the preproduction process to the production process you’ll want to make sure your song has enough contrast in the melody, harmony, and rhythm. Uslusoy further explains how to use multiple features inside Pro Tools to program drum sets and bass parts and use MIDI pads to ensure a smooth production process. This course also gives you an overview on how to execute vocal comping, manually editing pads, quantizing notes, using parametric EQ band to adjust frequencies, and applying different reverb plug-ins to add special effects to your tracks. In our context of the language of film and television, it relates to transmedia storytelling, transmedia narrative, and sometimes transmedia marketing. It is something that’s beneficial to both a producer and a fan of a given series, because it provides new sources of revenue as well as new approaches to telling a story. Dr. Arana explains that adaptive processing is a system that dynamically adjusts its parameters in response to changes in the input signal or environment through a three-stage pipeline. This video, which comes from Berklee Online’s Live Event Sound Engineering and Concert Mixing course by Amanda Davis and David Carroll, shows how audio comes from the stage, to a console, and then out to the PA system. Understanding this process is crucial for working with live performances, because in case something isnt coming through, chances are that the signal might not be routed correctly. “Routing” can be interchangeable with signal flow or signal path but, typically, it points to the designated physical inputs and outputs of the console. For example: Channels will route to the master fader, and the master fader will be routed to specific physical outputs on the console. The routing is still part of the overall signal flow process, however, and when speaking on signal flow the routing must be considered in order to determine the signal’s beginning and end points. She is a graduate of Chicago’s Roosevelt University and SAE Institute in Atlanta, where shortly after graduation she was hired as the Institute’s first woman in the roles of lab supervisor and music theory instructor. By understanding how music evokes emotion, musicians can connect more meaningfully with their audience while also enriching their own appreciation of the craft. Our brains have different structures that receive signals from the nervous system, identifying speech, sound, and rhythm. Rogers explains how when we sing or listen to a song we like, the chemical reactions in our brain release dopamine, encouraging us to keep listening. The 26 videos of this course reveal why we like certain songs by analyzing perception across musicians and non-musicians, cultural influences, metrical structures, and tonality. All of these factors show that every emotional response is unique, as it also depends on internal and external conditions such as when (and with whom!) you are listening. Rogers tells musicians that our nervous system enjoys a balance between familiarity and novelty, explaining that pop music and hit songs tend to be liked the most because they generally contain a familiar aspect along with an innovative element. Music not only causes emotional reactions, but also automatic physiological responses such as chills, which are often correlated with unexpected elements inside a song. Rogers says that we are most likely to like a song when it meets our expectations, as our brains like to anticipate melodies or rhythms based on our memory of past songs. When we like a song, our brain creates a template of the type of music we tend to like, which we remember each time we listen to something new. This course emphasizes that music is used for bonding and can be an identification of culture and identity, providing a sense of belonging. Her research focuses on auditory memory, the perception of musical signals, and the influence of musical training on auditory development. For two decades prior to her science career, Susan was one of the world’s few women known for her work as a record producer, engineer, mixer, and audio electronics technician. Career highlights include five years (1983-1987) as staff engineer for Prince, producing hit singles for diverse artists such as Barenaked Ladies, David Byrne, Robben Ford, Jeff Black, and Rusted Root, mixing hit singles for an equally eclectic list including Tricky, Michael Penn, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Tevin Campbell, and engineering for a host more. Susan is a professor at Berklee College of Music in the departments of Music Production & Engineering and Liberal Arts, and is the director of the Berklee Music Perception and Cognition Laboratory. In 2012, she was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award, Professional Writing and Music Technology Division.
