About the Series
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, we’re doing everything we can to flatten the curve — but even though the museum is closed, and we’re working from home, we still talk to artists around the world every day. Here in Houston, in Italy, in China, in San Francisco … artists, like all of us, are weathering the coronavirus personally and professionally.
About the Artist
Benny Merris (b. 1978, Boise, Idaho) is a New York-based artist who participated in Outside the Lines, a 2014 CAMH exhibition that celebrated sculptural abstract painting. CAMH Curator Dean Daderko was pleased to touch base with him recently to talk about two ongoing series of paintings and multimedia works he's been making for our CAMH Connects series of digital posts that keep us connected with YOU during this unprecedented period of social distancing. They speak about the abstract paintings he's been making on his arms that he photographs in natural settings (An Other Another, 2012-present), and about the large, elegant gestural paintings he's been making on black plastic contractor bags (Vitruvian Contractor Bags, 2016-present).
