A Christian caller named Moses tries to challenge my secular humanist morality — and ends up defending God's right to punish a 14-year-old girl for saying no to being impregnated. This one goes exactly where you think it does, and then it gets worse.
Moses opens by asking how a moral relativist can ground rape as objectively wrong. Fair question — and I lay out a full secular humanist framework built on harm reduction, bodily autonomy, and human flourishing. We actually find common ground on the goal of human flourishing before things go completely sideways. When we get to Luke 1 and Mary's so-called 'consent,' I walk through the passage — the angel doesn't ask, he tells. Mary calls herself God's slave. And when I bring up what God did to Jonah for saying no, Moses has to confront the obvious: Mary couldn't have refused even if she wanted to. Then I draw an analogy that strips away the theological insulation entirely — and Moses still can't bring himself to condemn God for the same act he'd condemn any human for. Special pleading doesn't get more naked than this.
