Called Out for a Purpose (Isaiah 61) Soul-stirring sermon by Pastor JD Howell
What kind of people does God call? In Isaiah 61, we are reminded that God does not come only for the polished, the proud, or the self-sufficient. He comes for the brokenhearted, the burdened, the captive, and the hurting. In this powerful sermon, Pastor JD Howell walks through the beautiful prophecy of Isaiah 61 and shows how Jesus Christ came to bring hope to those who feel hopeless, healing to those who are wounded, and freedom to those who are bound by sin, fear, bitterness, and heaviness.
Isaiah declares, “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek” - Isaiah 61:1. This message reminds us that the Gospel is still the greatest news the world has ever heard. No earthly announcement can compare to the truth that God loves sinners and that Jesus Christ died to save them. Christ still binds up the brokenhearted, proclaims liberty to the captives, and opens prison doors for those trapped in sin and despair. Through this message, we are challenged not to resist God’s work in our lives, but to let Him transform us into “trees of righteousness” planted for His glory.
Pastor Howell also connects Isaiah 61 to Luke 4, where Jesus stood in the synagogue and declared that this prophecy was fulfilled in Him. While many rejected Christ because of familiarity, unbelief, and pride, the Lord still offered healing, freedom, and restoration. This sermon is a call to stop demanding signs, stop questioning God’s goodness, and stop pushing Christ away. Instead, we are urged to humbly receive His Word and allow Him to rebuild what sin, sorrow, and failure have torn down. Will you let God do His work in your life today?
