The Battle of Zhawar was a large-scale, planned, combined-arms operation during the 1979–1989 Soviet-Afghan War. It was conducted in the remote mountainous region of Zhawar (Khost Province ), in the Afghan-Pakistani border zone, from April 4 to 20, 1986. Soviet and DRA forces engaged with mujahideen groups which were part of various movements including the Hezbi Islami, the Hezb-e Islami Khalis, the Harakat-i-Inqilab-i-Islami and the Mahaz-e-Melli, though all in theory came under the authority of regional commander Jalaluddin Haqqani.
"During my time in Afghanistan, I conducted a number of interesting and complex operations. Of course, every operation is different. Some left no lasting memories. Others will never fade. My most memorable operations were in the Kunar Gorge , during the assault on the Zhawar base, in the Parachinar Salient, in the Kunduz region, west of Herat to the Kokari-Sharshari base on the Iranian border in the Lurkoh mountain range, in the Lashkar Gah region, in Kandahar Province, and just beyond Kandahar."
