I traveled to Yreka, California with my video camera in 2002 where I shot and produced this segment about the legendary "State of Jefferson" This was for a wonderful program called "California Connected" produced at the time at Los Angeles infamous PBS station, KCET, the same place that the Huell Howser shows came out of.
The "State of Jefferson" is so named because it is a proposed new state composed of counties in southern Oregon and northern California, and it is named after Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President. The name is a reference to his writings on the social contract between government and the governed, which the movement believes has been broken by the existing state governments. The idea, as it exists today, was revived in the 1940s by a mayor of Port Orford, Oregon, who, with the help of a San Francisco reporter, sought to create a new state.
