California condors have been brought back from the very brink of extinction only through years of captive breeding programs and supplemental feeding of birds released into the wild. Some condor experts argue they will never be able to sustain and grow a viable California condor population because the megafauna they once relied on during their evolution is no longer available due to overhunting by humans over the last 12,000 years.
