Tasmin / The Wild Island Farm | Cagarro or Cory's shearwater | Weird Sounding Night Bird on the Azores @Tasmetu | Uploaded December 2020 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
The audio was recorded on Flores Island / Ilha das Flores (Azores, Portugal) in July 2020.
Ever heard weird sounds at night on the Azores? It is the Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis), or Cagarro, as the locals call it. It is a seabird that spends the daytime out on the ocean and only returns to land at night, so you mostly hear them when it is dark outside. They live on the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands between March and October to feed on the abundance of the Atlantic and raise their young. Do not disturb them when you encounter them. If you come across a hurt bird on the side of the road, especially during the fall months, contact the organization SOS Cagarro.
