Mt San Jacinto is the imposing large mountain that rises above the town of Palm Springs, CA. This is widely listed as one of the hardest day hikes in the country, because of the large vertical gain, but I don't find it to be that much as it's a nice trail all the way up. You can always cheat and take the tram up to save yourself 8000' of vert. I generally do this once a year when I'm in the area for work.
