In an effort to try and find out more about what's going on with this C64 with the ram and corrupt screen problems, i've got a cheap and mostly unpopulated board from eBay which i'll be able to use to see if any of the main chips work.
The eBay seller did say that the unpopulated board was tested and working - "It was tested with a harness with all chips installed and passed all tests. No work has been done on this board."
