In an attempt to provide protection for the Cyberspoon (should I ever decide to sell them), I decided to design and create some prototype plastic packaging. I modeled some bucks in Fusion 360, machined them out of Renshape, and vacuum-formed plastic sheets over them using the Mayku Formbox. I made several small mistakes throughout the process, like not venting concave features in my buck but ultimately overcame them.

Once you get the basics down, you can usually figure out the implementation out on your own. Getting comfortable with the terminology and wiring these up was by biggest hurdle.

Note: The mask concept I was working on was incomplete in several areas. I had not yet worked out how to install the filter piece in the front. There would have likely been a small printed insert either snapped on, or glued on. Also, I had not yet figured out how to attach elastic to the mask. Most likely candidate IMO would have been to solvent weld small loops to anchor straps to the mask body.

In this video, I'll go over how I designed, machined, and (poorly) anodized custom faceplates for my Maker Knife. I'll also show my process for creating a low cost Kydex sheath.
PS: The faceplates were machined back in mid 2019, but it didn't feel like a worthwhile/complete project to share until I had the sheath. That's why I reference some cnc lessons learned from months after the faceplates were made, regarding SFM. 1/4" cutters generally leave nicer surface finishes than smaller diameter tools.

He deserves better than the precision I could manage on my desktop CNC's. Still, getting within 0.01" on all my ridiculous 3-axis setups and despite my 5-axis troubles, I'm pretty proud of the end result.

Hobby machines really don't push the limits of what carbide tooling can do, so the limiting factor and resulting failure modes usually comes down to how clean your endmills are. Dirty endmills make ugly cuts, and can clog more easily.
Here's how you can use Lye (NaOH) to clean aluminum build up off your endmills, but the same techniques (with other solvents) can be used for other residue on your endmills.

The Nomad is too small, and so is the PocketNC, so anything I record on those machines with a GoPro tends to be a little blurry. This simple (but annoying to machine) adapter fixes that problem.
Also, I want to provide a little context for the shirt and design. I am under no illusion that my social clout is anywhere near the level of Diresta or Laura Kampf, so despite the fact that my 'brand' is me I really hate the idea of plastering my own name over everything. A creator whose merch aesthetic I really admire is MKBHD, his stuff is simple and understated. Let the design speak for itself. With this shirt (and the ones coming down the road) I wanted to make a way you guys could support me (if you wanted), but also make a shirt that you could wear normally without context. Short of designing humorous maker and cat shirts, this is the only way I know how to express myself. So that's why the shirt isn't obnoxiously "Winston-branded".

This video details my experimental process for arriving at some actionable guidelines for achieving good looking parts with small diameter endmills (low SFM).
Note: If you're machining wood or plastic, your toolpath application really isn't that important as neither can hold a remotely optical finish. Aluminum is shiny, so you'll notice every last defect.

By using my links, you are helping to support my content.Making a SpaceX Falcon Heavy Lithophane on the CNC - #138Winston Moy2019-01-11 | As an unabashed rocket lover, I decided to capture some iconic rocket photos an a physical medium. Using Corian as a base material I made 3 lithophanes, 2 of which I gave away. The one I held onto I made a maple pedestal on which to display.
Backlighting it with an LED candle adds a nice flicker effect to the piece, but I think I can do better with a more powerful LED array in the future.
