Hey Birt! | C128 VIC Tower Mystery: Solved? The mystery of the C128 VIC Tower mod board @HeyBirt | Uploaded July 2020 | Updated October 2024, 8 hours ago.
In this video we take an in depth look at the ‘VIC Tower’ mod board we found a few weeks ago in a dead C128. It was not causing the black screen problem, but its purpose was a mystery. At that time, we found out that it was indeed a Commodore factory mod and that it altered the /RAS timing but for what purpose it was not clear.
Before sending the repaired C128 back to its owner a logic analyzer was used to record signals going to the RAM chips, including the original and VIC Tower modified /RAS signal. After a good deal of digging I think we finally solved the mystery of what the little mod board was for.
For good measure we compare the data to another C128 which did not come with the mod board so we can try to rule a change to the VIC chip out.
