dwburmanJoin our crew of intrepid space adventurers as they witness the astronomical event of a lifetime. Will they survive the encounter or will their hubris be their downfall?
Hoo Boy! dwburman finally got around to making a cartoon short that wasn't for someone else. I hope you like this little sci-fi comedy spoof created by Dana W. Burman. This project has been years in the making, although, to be fair, most of that time was spent not working on it. :)
The 3D modeling and animation were done in LightWave 3D. You can see some samples and technique videos in the archives of this channel. Most of 2D animation was done in Adobe Character Animator with some shots done in After Effects. Editing and some basic compositing were done in Premiere Pro. 3D Coat, Photoshop, Illustrator and even a bit of Moho (the artwork for the first version of the 2D captain character) were used in making the visuals. Dana's audio was recorded in Reaper.
While the 3D bridge set was built and textured over the last several years (along with early versions of the captain character), the actual recording and animation of the episode and all the rest of the character artwork were largely made between December of 2019 and February 12, 2020 with a few more updates in March and April.

I tried making a custom home environment for the Windows Mixed Reality portal. I suppose this may have worked better if I made it in pieces instead of one object. Still, it mostly works. The main problem is that pitch black shadow that covers half the set.

Well, they're back in LW2019! You just need to use 2 nodes where before you only needed 1.
The original sculpt was was made in 3D Coat and exported as a hi res mesh. I had to do a bit of editing to get it to be printable and I did that in Lightwave and Chronosculpt.

To make this video, I slowed down the action and rendered a ton of frames.
This project was inspired by the Oreos episode of Bon Appétit's fantastic Gourmet Makes series.

The cookie blank made from the screen grab could use a bit more reworking both in design and in finishing, but it was mainly something I did for fun and to demonstrate the usefulness of 3D Printing in this application.
I admit I walk through the process probably too quickly for beginners. I wanted to demonstrate how quick the process can be. I apologize if it's too hard to follow along with me.

There is an update to this video that shows off a script someone wrote to automate some of this process. youtu.be/TCSNpBiyVio
The basic workflow is: 1) Do the Lip Sync in Character Animator. 2) Copy / Paste the Lip Sync solution to an item in After Effects that can be sent to LightWave (like the Y position channel on a light) 3) I'm AE, Use the 'Export Selected Layer to LightWave 3D' plugin to send the layer with the Lip Sync data to LW 4) In LW's node editor use the Lip sync item's animated channel as the input to a gradient and plug the mouth shape morphs or images into gradient key that correspond with the visemes used.Safety Action Team GO! :60 promodwburman2018-02-24 | ** March 1, 2018, 1:45 at the Emerald City Comic Con, I will be showing an excerpt of this show as well as a demonstration of how we used Character Animator and other Adobe software to make the it. **
Here's a faux commercial for my 80's cartoon inspired educational series for http://safetyambassadorprogram.com.
At this point, there are no plans for a public release of the series, so there's really no need to stay tune.
The 3D artwork was made in LightWave3D, and much of the 2D artwork was made, or at least started in Moho. Of course, any of the 2D artwork could've been made in Illustrator or Photoshop.
There's only audio in the first part of the video.

The setup was quick, but the render took a while, but I didn't try to get the render times down. I just let it render when I wasn't using the computer for other stuff.
In this video I open up an old scene in Lightwave 3D 2018 and troubleshoot some texturing and lighting issues.
In this scene I have to rework some textures where some things are no longer options and I have an issue with the falloff distance on some lights interfering with the new Cel shader.
LightWave 3D's edges are very versatile when using the node editor. In this example I show how to set the color and width to simulate a painted highlight on a cartoon building. I also show using a gradient to 'turn off' edges on the more vertical surfaces to better match the reference art. I plugged this into the taper, but I could've also plugged it into opacity instead.
If you noticed I'm using an older version of LightWave, it's because I recorded this on my laptop which I use for audio recording and hadn't bothered installing the latest version of LightWave on it yet.

This is a front row view of how I made a quick cartoon asteroid field in LightWave 3D using a (probably) rarely used modeling tool. I also do a bit of procedural texturing, deforming as well as instancing to turn one asteroid into a whole field.AE Experiment: Paint Bucket Effectdwburman2017-04-23 | A few experiments with AE's Paint Bucket effect. I was mainly animating the tool's Fill Point (the point where the "bucket" "pours" the "paint") and then combining several layers to get the look I wanted.
For the shots where I show a cross hair, that's just a shape layer that I have following the tool's fill point via an expression.
The video is a bit long and rambling, but the short version is:
• Put your Moho Layers into groups that use the same layer naming conventions as seen in the default AI puppet template, and make sure all layers are turned on. • Export frame as svg. Open the svg in Illustrator and save it as a .ai file. • Import the .ai into Character Animator and fix any tags that aren't quite right.
There may be some cleanup required and not all effects will survive the transition, but it does work.

NOTE: This is for adding track details to MP3 audio files. Not all audio files are MP3s. This trick does not work on ALL audio file formats. For instance, it does NOT work on .wav or .aif files. It does seem to work on .FLAC and .WMA files.
If you are on a Mac, you can use iTunes to add this info.
If you need to add album art, are on a mac, or this isn't working on Windows for some reason, you can do an online search for "ID3 Tag Editor" or "MP3 Tag Editor" to find one of the programs made specifically for this purpose.
I know some people who may find this tip handy.

It's the same ~8 seconds looping 3 times. It was done rendering when I realized that two of the 'cars' have the same paint job. Since it took about 19 hours on one computer to render the sequence (and the quality settings are a bit low for my taste), I don't think I'll bother rerendering it unless I get a real good reason to. :) Overall this was one of those projects where the end results were kind of disappointing for the amount of effort that went into it. Still, I think the concept is kind of neat.
