Joshua Martin StudiosToday I am going share with you my thoughts on the SLR Magic mircoprimes for the fuji xmount and which are my favorite to work with.
Disclaimer: SLR Magic did loan me these lenses, however, I am giving my personal thoughts on the set. As most of you already know, I use SLR Magic for my professional work and my films. I know where the strength and weaknesses are for the lenses.
I mainly use my XH1 for stills, but I have used it on a few projects. It is my B camera for my camera reviews to my BMPCC4K.
Across all of the microprimes - MFT, E mount, and xmount, they all have similar characteristics and of course, FOV will change depending on the camera system. I am excluding the APO microprimes because those are different optically.
If you want to watch the characteristic testing of these lenses, click on the link below.
12mm with an 18mm FOV - I really enjoy using wide-angle lenses, and I feel the 18mm is too tight for me. The 15mm is surprisingly a sleeper. It's the best of both worlds in this lineup. Don't let that T3.5 fool you, it still lets in a lot of light.
But for this I would pick the 12mm because I like the extreme wide look.
I've used the 25mm the most, both with the MFT and xmount. For the xmount it's roughly a 37.5mm FOV, in comparison to the 35mm, you are edging on to the 50mm FOV. The 25mm and 35mm have similar flares characteristics, but I would choose the 25mm.
Lastly the for 50 and 75mm, the 50mm is the fastest T stop of the set and it's a great mid close range lens.

I was so worried and excited at the same time. I learned alot about the K3super16 I own just by using it. I used Kodak vision 3 250D - exposure came out good, I had the lab push 1 stop. Focusing was challenging looking through the viewfinder, hence a lot of out focus shots. But over all happy how these random shots come out.

CONNECTION.
Now more than ever, connection drives our experience as humans. We’re excited to have connected with 10k of you over the few years. But connection can be so much more than that; whether it’s connecting with others virtually during physical distancing, connecting with those who don’t share the same skin tone or culture to better understand, or simply connecting the dots on a new idea or skill.
We want you to tell us your story of connection.
We want you to be creative, show your story focused on the theme of connection. We’ll review all submissions and choose winners based on who creates the film that most powerfully captures that idea.
Rig Culture was built out of a love for the creativity and passion that goes into building rigs and the incredible stories they capture.
With so many possibilities, we aim to curate the best of the best so that you can see how other filmmakers build their rigs, problem solve and innovate in creating their rigs - from iPhones to Fully-Kitted Cinema Rigs.
We hope to serve as a guide and inspiration as you build your best rig!

#SLRMagic #ZCamE2 #lenstestSLR Magic Microprime MFT & EF vs Rokinon DS Cine - CA and focus breathing test // Z Cam E2-S6Joshua Martin Studios2020-08-06 | I like to test my lenses in this particular spot in my kitchen. Super boring but tells me a lot how my lens will perform in high contrast situations, what does the CA look like, how does the bokeh look, sharpness, and does the lens breathe. I filmed each lens at it's widest T stop.
2:20 - Rokinon DS CINE 24mm T1.5 EF 2:54 - Rokinon DS CINE 50mm T1.5 EF
3:27 - Side by side comparison
I like to think this test "breaks" lenses to a certain extent. The main comparison will be between the SLR Magic Microprime 21mm T1.6 and 50mm T1.4 MFT to the Rokinon DS CINE 24mm and 50mm T1.5 T1.5 EF.
Do let the mounts confuse you. The Z Cam E2-S6 has interchangeable mounts and the SLR magic Microprime 12mm (not in this test) 21mm and 50mm cover the sensor.
I throw in the APOs to get a point of reference for the top tier lenses SLR Magic makes.
My results are as followed:
There is CA present in both the SLR Magic Micrprimes 21 and 50mm MFT and Rokinons 24mm and 50mm wide open. The CA is more apparent in the bokeh for the Rokinons. The Rokinons are VERY soft and unusable wide open in my open. The Microprimes (MFT) are sharper wide open. For those who care.
The APOs performed the best. But you'll notice a green shifted in the 25mm T2.1. Not a hard fix in post...but something to be aware of. I just change the tint in resolve/fcpx and introduce more magenta to balance it.
Like I mentioned before, I like to think this test "breaks" lenses to a certain extent. There is a bit of CA in the 25mm but in the 50mm it's hardly there. CA is one of those things that can't fully be removed. Even Arri admits this and they just add warm or cool elements to compensate for CA (fact check please). I highly recommend watching these reference videos.

It’s odd not having my pocket anymore - I loved working with BRAW an amazing codec to work with and the workflow in resolve was soooooooooo simple. But my user experience was subpar. I made it work and rigged it how I wanted it but there were some key issues that didn’t make the pocket 4K or 6k future proof in my opinion.
1. Mounts/sensor - Owning two cameras with MFT (Gh5 and bmpcc4k) taught me a lot on a technical level - convergence with the crop heavy crop and exposure to name a few. Moving to a larger sensor is a welcomed change. MFT mount is flexible with the added speed booster but I personally didn’t like some of the characteristics that it introduces. The bmpcc6k mount had issues. There was to much play with any EF glass I put on it.
2. Build quality/durability - the bmpcc4k/6k needs a cage mainly for protection. The plastic body was always a concern - of course adding a cage opens more mount abilities which a given.
3. Future proof. The bmpcc4k/6k are excellent camera and will get the job done - but they are limiting in hardware - you get what you get.

Today I am sharing with you all my recent camera Easyrig RIG breakdown with the BMPCC4K and Tilta Nucleus M. I've been getting a lot of questions about it. I am still a newbie when it comes to easyrig operating but I have a few things to show you how I use it. But WATCH THIS video on operating an easy rig, I refer to this video a lot.
KEY TAKEAWAYS - an easy rig is NOT a gimbal or stabilizer. Easy rigs are to help with camera weight and allows more natural handheld movements. You can pair the easy rig with a stabilization system, just don't be mistaken that it'll correct bad camera movement. Just take your time and practice.

#bmpcc4k #gh5 #slrmagicMy color grading workflow // Using CST in DaVinci Resolve 16 // Body & Earth BTSJoshua Martin Studios2020-02-18 | My color workflow // Using CST in DaVinci Resolve 16 // Body & Earth BTS
Walkthrough starts here: 2:15
Hey beautiful people, it's ya boy Joshua martin - today I will be talking about my grading process and a little bts of my latest film "body & earth".
I never really talked about grading because I was never confident in it. But in the last 8 months, I've been slowly building that confidence, especially when I was learning how to use Davinci Resolve 15 now 16. Putting myself in several Facebook groups about grading, took online courses and watched youtube videos. And I also teamed up with a colorist, Joshua Bennett, who colored my film Lost Souls - youtube.com/watch?v=sXnrcwBZtfo.
I say all of this because its important to face challenges and learn what you can, either in your career and in life. I know I'm not going to be a colorist but most of my budgets for the film projects don't allow to hire a colorist, so it's up to me.
In this particular case filming with the bmpcc4k - I know for a fact putting a creative lut and going from there will be under minding the power of this little camera and what it can produce. I've seen some amazing colorwork that people have produced in BRAW. so I wanted to really understand how I can maximize my color workflow with BRAW.
To get to the point with this project. After doing some research I found this YouTuber who used the CST and the Arri rec709 to get "Arri" like colors. More especially to get better greens and highlight roll-off. This really applied to me. So I experimented.
