New spring rates and valving are all that's needed to improve the ride quality of the Yamaha Raptor 700R's stock shocks. When combined with a Hess linkage for the rear shock the Raptor's ride height can be lowered lowering the machine's center of gravity and improving stability. Ron Elmore, owner of Rocket Ron Racing out of Attica Indiana, has been racing, building race quads and tuning ATV suspension since the 1980s. They specialize in revalving and setting up OEM shocks, We asked Ron if he could help us get the most out of our Raptor’s OEM shocks. A few weeks after sending our shocks off they were back in our possession revalved, resprung and restyled. For our setup Ron recommended we utilize a Hess linkage. Rocket Ron often recommends a Hess linkage. The Hess link lowers the rear of the quad around an inch and reduces the ramp up in firmness throughout the stroke allowing you to more easily access full travel with less mid-stroke harshness.With Rocket Ron's revelved Raptor 700R shocks and Hess linkage, If we lived out west we wouldn’t hesitate to install a kill switch and take our Raptor to a Worcs race or even try a local motocross race, the shocks are certainly up to it. The easiest way to access more horsepower is typically by installing a good aftermarket exhaust and fuel controller. We often chose the HMF Titan Quiet Series for our 4x4 ATV builds and testing because they work to maximize horsepower gains while maintaining sound output typically within 2 to 3db of stock. Keeping sound down keeps riding areas open and more welcoming to ATVs. HMF’s Titan series exhausts are available in full systems from the header back, or as a slip-on system like the one we’ve been using. The Titan series is constructed of corrosion resistant stainless steel, utilizing a single 14” stainless steel silencer. The Titan’s silencer core and combination steel wool with a glass pillow wool packing greatly reduces the frequency at which the silencer needs repacking Choosing the Titan QS, we went with maximum power gains without much added sound output, which we feel good about. Although, our decision to use the less expensive and easier to install slip- on version could have left a little more horsepower on the table, we still enjoyed more power out of the Renegade 1000R, focused in the area of the power curve where the rider can best make use of it. We recently had the opportunity to put the 2023 Arctic Cat Alterra 600, Alterra 600 Mud Pro, and Alterra 600 Black Hills Edition to the test. After wrapping up a tour of the Arctic Cat factory in Thief River Falls we traveled over an hour to the Beltrami Forest for testing. We grabbed an XT, Black Hills Edition and Mud Pro and headed out for a few hours to see that the Alterra 600 line had to offer. Compared to their full size 4x4s of old, the Alterra 600 is leaps and bounds better than anything we’ve experienced from Arctic Cat previously. Its performance is definitely at home and competitive with the other machines in the 500cc-600cc 4x4 segment. Big low-end power, the ability to take advantage off its IRS design while retaining a stable feeling ride make the Alterra 600 a unique machine we enjoyed riding. Experiencing the XT, Black Hills and Mud Pro we came away impressed with Arctic Cats numerous, well thought out options. The Mud Pro is similar to the Yamaha Grizzly 700 XTR, a trail worthy, mud tire equipped 4x4. However, the Mud Pro possesses true mud ATV specific capabilities and features for $800 less than the Grizzly. The Black Hills Edition could be a great choice for the person who typically rides rocky eroded SXS trails thanks to its larger tires and added ground clearance. It retains the length and width of a typical 4x4 ATV and costs $6,299 less than the Polaris Sportsman S or Scrambler S, renowned for their rough trail capability and out of reach retail prices. As typical all around trail riders ourselves, we came away most impressed with the nearly base model Alterra 600 XT. The smaller 25” tires of the base model and XT yield the best handling on smooth to moderate trail conditions along with the most responsive feeling engine performance. We could easily see Arctic Cat filling the need for an affordable sport 4x4 with the Alterra 600 platform. We guess the takeaway is this, Arctic Cat has targeted the most popular segment in ATVing with a number of uniquely specked models offering something for every type of 4x4 rider and overall performance that should be taken seriously. . Polaris shocked the ATV world in 2019 with the launch of the 55” wide, 2020 Scrambler S and Sportsman S models. The Scrambler S is arguably the most radical ATV ever made. It’s one of the top horsepower producers with 89HP. It’s 55” width and 57.4” wheelbase, 14.5” of ground clearance and over a foot of highly-adjustable suspension travel at both ends allow the Scrambler S to hammer whoops and rip jumps like no other 4x4 could ever dream while easily conquering rutted and rock strewn trail surfaces left over from a decade of side-by-sides. In January of 2022, Polaris announced that the Scrambler S would be rejoining their ATV lineup, including its high-end Walker Evans shocks along with Polaris’ brand new Multi-Select electric power steering, and a bold new look for 2022 that’s carried over to 2023.For 2022 and 2023, Polaris made the Scrambler S even better. ATVonDemand 2022-08-21 | YFZ450R Adjustable Upper A-Arms by Teixeira Tech Test Review: The Best Upgrade for The YFZ450R? Teixeira Tech is a bit of a high end boutique brand offering a surprising amount of value for the price. Teixeira Tech’s A-Arms are built in the United States of tig welded 4130 chromoly. Just like Teixeira’s full set of XGC arms, their CXC upper A-Arms add camber and caster adjustment to the YFZ’s front end. Teixeira's caster adjustment system is simple and intuitive. The notched system can be loosened up, adjusted and tightened in a couple of minutes. This makes optimizing handling easy for riding in tighter or wide open conditions. The included Caster Bracket eliminate the YFZ450R’s caster increase with their Caster Bracket that raises the rear of the A-Arm making it more in line with the angle of the lower Arms. Teixeira tells us that you can’t make the upper and lower A-Arms perfectly parallel with the lowers. For this reason, Teixeira Tech’s Caster Bracket slightly overshoots parallel, which causes caster to slightly decrease as the front end compresses. This allows the machine to turn in slightly quicker with less effort and bump feedback through the bars.Having ridden them, we’d go as far as to say that Teixeira Tech’s CXC A-Arms are a must have upgrade for any YFZ450R owner looking to maximize performance for the least amount of money. For many of us, the YFZ450R’s 48.5” width and 9.8” of front suspension travel is plenty. Teixeira Tech’s CXC upper arms undoubtedly improve handling and offer all the adjustment of a full set of aftermarket A-Arms at a fraction of the price. Best of all, since they don’t change any leverage ratios on the front end they don’t require you to spend any added money on your shocks until you’re ready to take that next step. The 570 SP, later the 570 Premium, then the 570 Trail in 2021, Polaris added their Ride Command GPS/infotainment system to their Dual A-Arm-equipped Sportsman 570 trail for 2022, along with a few other added features, creating the new Sportsman 570 Ride Command Edition we’re testing. Ride Command is also available on the 2022 Sportsman XP 1000. For 2022, all Polaris Sportsman models equipped with electric power steering now feature Polaris’ Multi Select electronic power steering with three modes of assistance from which to choose. The Ride Command edition and Ultimate Trail versions also have three selectable throttle modes.LED lighting is used at both ends on the Trail, Ultimate Trail, and Ride Command Editions. High and low beam lights are mounted up front with an additional high beam light pod that turns with the handlebars. New LED accent lights are found on both models. If you’re considering the high-end, McPherson Strut-equipped 570 Premium, you’d be crazy not to spend $700 more and get the dual A-Arm front suspension, upgraded lighting, and factory installed winch on the 570 Trail. If you tend to ride in smaller ride parks and typically ride 4x4s like sport quads, you’ll currently pay $1,800 more for the Ride Command edition than the Trail edition. Unlike Polaris’ RZR, Ranger, and General side-by-side models, Ride Command isn’t inside a roll cage. One good tip over could easily cost you a couple grand or more in repairs. After producing the number-one test video online from their March , 2019 press event in the Nevada desert, we went on to produce our Scrambler S series. In part one we tested the Scrambler XP 1000 S in the wooded trails of the eastern United States. In parts two, three, and four we put the Scrambler S up against the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000, Can-Am Outlander 1000R and the Yamaha Raptor 700R to help determine how this performance monster compared to the more traditional size big-bore ATVs currently on the market. While the Sportsman S returned to Polaris lineup with the release of the other 2022 ATV models last year, we were a little sad that the Scrambler S was missing from the lineup. Especially considering Polaris had switched from Premium, reservoir equipped Walker Evans shocks on the Sportsman S to basic five-way preload adjustable shocks for the 2022 model year. In January of 2022 Polaris announced that the Scrambler S would be rejoining Polaris’ ATV lineup including its high-end Walker Evans shocks plus Polaris’ brand new Multi-Select electric power steering, and a bold new look for 2022. With mixed feelings among our riders regarding the Scrambler’s power steering on the 2020 and 2021 models we were thrilled to the opportunity to throw a leg over the new updated version of Polaris ultimate thrill ride. Our local Polaris dealer Midwest Polaris near Cincinnati Ohio is under new enthusiastic ownership. Based on the number of comments on our Can-Am Outlander test videos, there are a number of you out there craving even more horsepower from your 1-liter Rotax engine. We won’t lie. We’re trying to be careful with the throttle on the 1000cc Can-Am’s at times. But we also understand that when you’re trying to win a drag race against some guy on a hopped-up sport quad or one of those lumbering caged vehicles, a little more horsepower never hurts. It’s also a benefit when ripping big mud tires. We came away feeling better about piping the Outlander 1000R than we originally expected. We made more power that we could feel, and our quad ran cooler which will translate into longer life. Choosing the Titan Quiet, we went with maximum power gains with minimal additional sound output. While our choice to use the less expensive slip-on version could have left a little more horsepower on the table, we still enjoyed more power out of the Outlander 1000R focused in the area of the power curve where the rider can best make use of it. With only complements on the deep throaty sound of the Titan QS, you’ll at least retain the appearance of sensibility as you make your Rotax even more insanely fun to ride. ATVonDemand test riders Chad Westcott and Brent Johnson took a trip to Dirty Turtle Off-Road park in Bedford Ky to put 182 HP of the most powerful, trial focused, 4x4 ATVs head to head. The Can-Am Renegade 1000R X XC and Outlander 1000R XT-P.Choosing between these machines could be tough. We know we’d be leaving a lot of capability on the table if we went with the Renegade, because the Outlander is an ideal tool for working, hunting, and camping. But how much performance would we leave on the table if we didn’t choose the Renegade and are there any other important differences we might not be considering.Can-Am tells us they share identically tuned 91 HP Rotax 1000R engines with identical clutching, but we still expected the Renegade to pull out in front based on it’s lighter weight and the fact that it’s a friggen Renegade. Suspension travel is also identical on the Outlander 1000 and Renegade 1000 with 9.2” up front and 9.9” out back. Fox Podium 1.5 shocks are used on both machines. The Renegade’s Podium RC2 shocks feature all the external adjustments you’d expect from high-end race shocks. The Outlander’s Podium QS3 shocks feature threaded spring preload along with simple intuitive 3-way compression damping settings. Power steering settings are slightly different with the two machines primarily for their different tire sizes.Identical hydraulic disc brakes stop both machines and do a pretty good job of it too considering our rider and machine combos are nearly a half a ton of Rotax propelled mass. As we finished our laps and our ride for the day it was pretty obvious to both of us what our decision would be if we were choosing between these machines. We’d opt for the greater utility of the Outlander in XT-P trim and sleep peacefully knowing we weren’t giving up much performance. But if you're still having trouble deciding between the two keep in mind that Can-Am’s premium options are customizable, and the perfect blend of performance and utility for you could be the Outlander in X-XC trim. July of 2016 ATV on Demand published the 3rd installment in our Classics ATV test series featuring the 1983-1987 Honda ATC200X. This documentary not only went on to become the largest in the series to date, it has become one of our most viewed videos of all time. Like the ATV industry itself, times change, things change and people change. Similar to our ATC250R and 350X Classics test machines we started building our 1984 ATC200X for its own episode in our Rust To Glory vintage ATV upgrade series. Unfortunately our 200X’s mechanic and long-time test rider departed without warning, resulting in the project being put on the back burner for quite some time. Things got back on track when we handed our mostly assembled 200X over to the ATV experts and racing enthusiasts at Mud Motorsports in Martinsville, Indiana near Indianapolis. Your first ATV is often the most memorable and exciting, so for all of the parents out there with young riders entering the sport, we’re proud to present our test of the 2021 Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI The Outlaw 70 EFI is an ATV that leaves riders more room to grow into than the 50 it replaces, in both size and overall performance. This should keep the 70’s fun factor up for a longer period of time before its time to step it up to the Outlaw 110. With more displacement, fuel injection, disc brakes all around, larger tires and wheels, and an overall larger machine, Polaris has certainly packed a lot of features into the Outlaw 70 EFI for only $100 more than the Outlaw 50. However it seems that some and attention to detail was sacrificed to reach its $2,349 price point. On the bright side, fuel injection makes the engine run flawlessly, the suspension could be best in class, its stable, has good tires, It stops well, is pretty comfortable, and splash protection isn’t bad either. For us the bottom line is this, while it’s not perfect, with so much going for it Polaris Outlaw 70 should have no problems putting smiles on the faces of up and coming riders for years to come. Our expectations for this machine, after the number of high-performance tests we’ve done over the last two years we’re certainly tempered, and rightfully so. It’s not the over powered performance-oriented machines that are offered by other manufacturers. But having the Rubicon around for so long gave us the opportunity to see exactly why so many enthusiasts ride red their entire lives. Any machine will break when subject to the right amount of abuse, but Honda tends focus on quality components, attention to detail, and fit and finish that leads to extended lifespans. The Rubicon is the ideal machine for the hardcore explorer, work, or even as a low maintenance mud machine because of the advantages of the Honda Transmissions over the commonly used CVTs. There are some sacrifices in performance compared with the competition, but that didn’t prevent us from having a blast on the Rubicon. Our test machine is the Sportsman 450 H.O. with EPS which has a starting price of $7,299 in the US but budget conscious consumers can opt for the non-EPS version with a modest starting price of $6,399 US. Both options come in either Sage Green like our test machine or Zenith Blue for the same price. Polaris also has utility packages available for the for the non-EPS 450 H.O. that aren’t available as packages for the EPS version, but there are a lot of options in factory accessories for both models. The ride is distinctly plush as we’ve come to expect from Polaris and for an entry level machine, the 450 h.o. retains a lot of the quality look and feel of Polaris’s more premium options. Intuitive and easy operation is what Polaris was going for with their 450 and 570 class lineups and we feel they’ve accomplished that goal with the Sportsman 450 EPS. The clutch and shift lever operates smoothly giving the Sportsman a refined feeling compared to some of its competition. The long shift lever that we’ve considered awkward in the past, makes for easy control of gear selection especially for frequent shifting or while plowing or working in tight areas, and modest but usable power make it an ideal choice as a budget friendly tool or a capable trail explorer. Starting with Fuel Customs, a company known for making big horsepower gains with their intakes and air filter combinations, recommended that we run a Barker's Performance dual exhaust to match their intakes quest to increase overrev while carrying the Raptor's incredible torque curve farther. We paired the Fuel Custom's intake and Barker's Performance exhaust with a Dynojet Power Commander V fuel and ignition tuner to match the increase airflow of the intake and exhaust with added fuel. We also installed a Dynojet Autotune for creating new fuel maps for our future engine upgrades. The result was an added 11-13 horsepower, a broader power and torque curve, and a huge boost in fun factor for our Raptor's engine. We haven't been this impressed with an intake, exhaust, and air/fuel ratio upgrade on a sport ATV since we installed our first set of pipes on a Yamaha Banshee back in the 1990s. If you haven't ridden a Raptor with the Big-3 engine upgrades, you have no idea how fun the Raptor really is. 2009 Kawasaki KFX450R Test Review ATVonDemand 2021-01-27 | Released in 2008, the Kawasaki KFX450R is a capable winner on the Motocross tack with the right setup but is perhaps the best 450 for the trail.. Its as smooth running as any 400 off the bottom with more power and revability than the 400cc class machines posses. 1st gear is low enough for crawling alone and gear ratios are well spaced. Plus it has reverse. Its somewhat twitchy yet agile front end changes direction quickly and accurately with razor sharp precision. Suspension is on the soft size while offering decant bottoming resistance. Its not the perfect 450 but its perfect for some and responds well to modifications.
