This is a great question because, with anything you use and carry every day, a little maintenance goes a long way. We also want to make sure that maintaining your launcher is just as easy as using it.
So first, what is the oil CO2 cartridge?
In every Byrna 10-count box of CO2 cartridges, you'll notice one cartridge has the word "OIL" marked on the side. That's the oil cartridge. I know—it's a little on the nose.
The oil CO2 cartridge is specifically designed to help lubricate and maintain the internal components of your launcher. The best part is that it does all the work for you while you're shooting or training.
Byrna recommends using the oil cartridge as you work your way through each box of 10 CO2 cartridges. This helps keep the seals, valves, and other internal components properly lubricated so your launcher continues to function the way it should.
To use it, first make sure your launcher is completely unloaded. Remove the magazine, verify there are no projectiles in the chamber, and always point the launcher in a safe direction.
Next, insert the oil CO2 cartridge just as you would a standard CO2 cartridge and fire the launcher repeatedly. The oil cartridge functions exactly like a regular cartridge—you'll get approximately the same number of shots at the same velocities as you would with a standard CO2 cartridge.
Personally, I recommend using the oil CO2 cartridge during a training session. That allows the oil to circulate through the internal system and lubricate the parts that need it most.
Once the cartridge is spent, remove it and replace it with a fresh, unpierced CO2 cartridge so your launcher is back in its ready-to-defend state.
