If you've seen a foreign film in America, you almost certainly saw it with subtitles, but in Italy every major film and television show is dubbed into Italian for exhibition. It's a tradition that began at the dawn of sound film, when much of the Italian public was illiterate and Mussolini's fascist regime saw an opportunity to both standardize the Italian language and censor foreign films through dubbing. Today, the Italians are world renown for their mastery of the art of dubbing, but the voice actors that lend their talent to Hollywood's biggest stars remain largely behind the scenes.
IT'S BETTER IN ITALIAN follows three dubbers at different stages of their careers: Roberto Pedicini, a juggernaut talent among the doppiatori and the voice of Kevin Spacey, Javier Bardem, Jim Carrey, and many more; Davide Perino, a 4th generation dubber who has dubbed Elijah Wood since they were both 10-years-old; and Ugo De Cesare, a student of Roberto's who hopes to break into the notoriously difficult industry. Through their stories, and commentary from a supporting cast of the most prolific Italian dubbers, we discover the difficulty of successfully practicing this obscure craft, both inside and outside of the loop booth.

They are singers, musicians, choreographers and directors. They are between twenty and thirty years old. They have been chosen for their excellence and start their residency at the Academy of the Paris Opera. Culture and music are their trump cards and their strength. They embody both diversity and living together, but also a new generation of committed artists. They talk Mozart, Puccini, Verdi… via Skype and their cell phones. They are the world and the talents of tomorrow. Along with these artists, throughout an entire season, we discover the mysterious world of the Opera and make it accessible to all. We keep pace with their apprenticeship, their art, their doubts and hopes until they take their first steps on the stages of the Bastille or the Garnier Opera houses. This film is their story.

Where do the soul-searching images of the First World War come from? Not merely telling the war, but seeing it, showing it in flesh and blood: this is what graphic novels offer us today. Exploring archives and history, the authors in this program converse with the depth of time. They make First World War live again in our imagination: their drawings are more than strokes. These major artists have made the War the main subject of their graphic tales. We share with them a fascinating task: outlining fragments of memory in a chronicle in drawings of the Great War.

Almost 35 years after their breakthrough, a-ha still creates magic on stage with their melancholic and timeless music. They tour the world but drive in separate cars and stay apart backstage. They only meet on stage, while doing the one thing they love. The film closely portrays the challenging creative and personal dynamics of a group of three strong individuals. This is a story of great music, big ambitions, broken friendship – and maybe forgiveness.

The Goethe House in Weimar is widely regarded beyond the country's borders as one of Germany's most significant cultural monuments. Over 40 million visitors from around the world have already explored the "genius loci" of this place, which has remained virtually unchanged since Goethe's death, thanks to fortunate circumstances. It is precisely this that makes the walk through the rooms and the garden an unforgettable experience. This film expertly explains the art treasures housed in the Goethe House and the camera even allows a glimpse into the most sacrosanct rooms that would otherwise remain off-limits to "ordinary visitors." Additionally, the author invites us on a biographical journey through decisive stages and periods in Goethe's life. Many of the furnishings become vivid and understandable to the viewer only through this historically authentic connection. Thus, as we tour the rooms of the Weimar poet's house, we enter into Goethe's fascinating world.

"Garrincha é o nome de um passarinho alegre, cor de terra. Este filme pretende mostrar, entre outras coisas, que quem apelidou Manoel Francisco dos Santos de Mané Garrincha conhecia tanto o rapaz quanto o passarinho, e era um poeta."
Este foi o primeiro documentário brasileiro sobre um esportista, além do primeiro longa-metragem de Joaquim Pedro de Andrade.

Fallas, the Festival of Fire is a documentary that has been recorded for 4 frenetic days, the same days this spectacular festival runs. Monuments, flowers, music and pyrotechnics, as well as Valencian people who live the Fallas intensely, are its protagonists; like Manolo García, the architect of the main Fallas sculpture in Valencia, who wants to make history by raising a sculpture of more than 20 meters high in the heart of the city; or Ana, at the age of just 8, who will live an unforgettable experience in this Fallas festival.

In the 11th and 12th centuries, when the pilgrimage to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela was at its height of popularity, over half a million travellers a year undertook the journey on foot from the four corners of Europe, their piety a form of insurance against the eternal damnation foretold by the Catholic Church. Surprisingly, our skeptical times have seen a resurgence in interest in this pilgrimage, and once again, thousands of people set out on the Camino de Santiago every summer. The reasons for undertaking this journey are many and varied, but among the obvious pleasures it offers is the chance to see many of Europe's finest Christian monuments - churches, abbeys, paintings and sculptures - located on the medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain.
Shot in southern France and northern Spain, Didier Baussy-Oulianoff's film explores the legend of Saint James and its spiritual, political and artistic significance. The film reveals the magnificent artistic heritage that resulted from the saint's domination, while restoring the peace and tranquility of yesteryear on stretches of the Camino that are still hiking trails. Paths of sublime beauty. The director also talks to some of today's pilgrims about their reasons for undertaking this journey. The program captures the splendor and ritual of the celebrations in Santiago's majestic cathedral, and includes the prayer offered to the saint by King Juan Carlos, on behalf of the whole of Spain.

When America was establishing its intelligence services at the beginning of World War II and needed spies to gain information, they turned to Hollywood stars. They were used to travelling in secret, had access to power and could get infiltrate areas that were closed for other members of the public. They could act and be discreet. They had powerful admirers in various industries, many with easy access to politicians and high ranking government officials. Nobody in the world would miss the chance to welcome and talk to icons like Cary Grant, Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo.

Who would have suspected that Greta Garbo, Hollywood's most enigmatic actress, was a spy during the Second World War? And yet the woman who played the legendary spy Mata Hari contributed to the war effort, as did fellow actors Marlene Dietrich and Cary Grant. The much-admired "Divine", who left her native Sweden for the USA to launch her acting career, used her image and contacts in Europe to exfiltrate scientist and Nobel Prize winner for physics Niels Bohr from Denmark. Bohr went on to help Robert Oppenheimer's Manhattan Project team build the atomic bomb.

Jean Harlow was one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood in the 1930s and well known for her portrayal of "bad girl" characters and a leading sex symbol at that time. Her first major role was in Howard Hughes "Hell's Angels" (1930) and was later followed by movies that built on her comedic talent such as "Red-Headed Woman" (1932), "Red Dust" (1932), "Dinner at Eight" (1933), "Reckless" (1935), and "Suzy" (1936). Much more than the sex symbol MGM cast her as, Jean Harlow left her mark on Hollywood with her sparkling, dedicated performance. Jean Harlow was also an actress who was crushed by Hollywood and by her family, who dominated her. She died at the age of 26 of kidney failure while filming "Saratoga" which became MGM's most successful film of 1937, as well as the highest-grossing film of Harlows career. Harlow, with the eternal nickname "platinum blonde", always imbued the cinema with her aura, and was a source of fascination for Marilyn Monroe throughout her tragic career.

Although the Cold War virtually ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Hollywood still relies on it for box office value. The witch hunt has been on for more than 50 years, and Hollywood has cashed in on fear and paranoia ever since. During World War II there were the Nazis, and the Russian people were supported "in their heroic fight" against the aggressor. Once the Nazis had been defeated and the Cold War was under way the roles were reversed and yesterday's allies became today's enemies. America went hysterical with anti-communist paranoia.
When Hollywood blacklisted because of suspicions of communism

The Cold War, by polarizing the world in two, created a paranoia that was to reshape the Hollywood landscape: the Red Scare, a fear of the Communist threat from within. The loyalty of American citizens was called into question, as anyone could be a Communist spy ready to overthrow the government. And so, to prevent the spread of Eastern bloc ideology, it was necessary to regain control of the mass communication instrument par excellence: the cinema. U.S. Senator Joseph R. McCarthy decided to set up a committee to investigate Hollywood film industry and potential Communists within it. And to keep them off the screen. During investigations, Hollywood employees could lose their jobs if they refuse to cooperate or if they are under suspicion.
The "House Un-American Activities Committee" held trials against blacklisted filmmakers. The famous Hollywood Ten who refused to testify got a one-year prison sentence. Even Humphrey Bogart had to use his formidable publicity machine to make clear to the American public that he was no communist. Over the years, a lot of actors, directors, screenwriters and producers were unable to work due to the blacklist, including stars like Dalton Trumbo and Charlie Chaplin.

With the Great Depression and evaporating income cinema attendance fell drastically, to counter this trend Hollywood became more and more violent and sexy, to a point that a call for censorship of some kind was in the air. Indeed the better organized catholic minority created the Catholic Legion of Decency and the clergy admonished their Sunday church goers to boycott certain cinemas and films. Hollywood became to be viewed as a place of the damned and sinful. As cinema became a tool of mass control, socially disturbing subjects were banned from screenplays. Hollywood had to convey an image that conformed to societal norms. Studios began to censor screenplays that were too explicit or took liberties with American moral codes. This code was ruthlessly enforced from 1934 onwards, with the arrival of the rigid Joseph Breen as head of the Censorship Board.

The story of Vincenzo Peruggia, the man who stole the Mona Lisa. How did an unassuming housepainter from Italy pull off “the greatest little known art heist in modern time?” Was his motivation more than money? Writer-director Joe Medeiros traces the path of Vincenzo Peruggia, charged with the 1911 theft of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa from The Louvre, and finds the story of a daughter mourning the father she never knew and a country recovering from old wounds. Combining historical photographs, animation and interviews with Peruggia’s descendants, Medeiros answers why and how the man called “Macaroni” by his French co-workers absconded with and kept the legendary painting for two years.

Today, it's hard to imagine that the world's most famous painting could be stolen, especially in broad daylight. And yet, in 1911, a guard at the Louvre Museum decided to steal the Mona Lisa to restore his country's honor by returning the spoliations commited under Napoleon. His name, Vincenzo Peruggia, will go down in history. Yet the Mona Lisa was not his first choice, even though the museum is home to many more famous Italian paintings. The Mona Lisa's singularity: its size. Indeed, it's easier to transport in broad daylight without arousing suspicion. This excerpt explains with a touch of humour how, in just 15 minutes, Peruggia managed to steal the painting and bring it back to his little bedroom in the 10th arrondissment and back to Italy. For 2 years, the Louvre will be orphaned by what will soon be its most famous painting. Astonishingly, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Mona Lisa didn't have the popularity or the aura it has today. An incredible theft story worthy of a Hollywood film

Film noir describes a kind of movie dealing with crime, private eyes, plain clothes policemen, hapless grifters, law-abiding citizens lured into a life of crime or simply victims of circumstance and often in the presence of a "femme fatale".
The term "film noir" was originally coined by the French film critic Nino Frank and taken from "série noir" which was a popular collection of detective stories in France. Film historians still argue whether there is such a genre. It occurred mainly in the 40s and 50s with a revival in the 70s. The first true film noir is supposed to be the Maltese Falcon (1941). Others think it was Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity (1943) or even Josef von Sternbergs Underworld (1927).

The archetype of the femme fatale didn't originate with cinema; in painting, it's symbolized by the biblical character Salome. However, it was with the advent of Film Noir that the femme fatale became a popular archetype, with famous actresses giving her their features. In film noir, the femme fatale symbolizes men's fears. She is Eve, the deviant who will lead man to his doom, a dangerous promise whose temptation is far too great. In film noir, the femme fatale symbolizes men's fears. She is Eve, the deviant who will lead man to his doom, a dangerous promise whose temptation is far too great. It's worth noting that the femme fatale character emerged at a time when women in the United States were gaining economic and social independence. The detectives and anti-heroes of film noir were falling into the hands of women who were working, wealthy or single. Far from the feminine standards of the time. And yet, over 50, 60 years later, they continue to haunt cinema with their iconic aura. Gene Tierney will remain the emblematic and phantasmatic Laura, the woman with the portrait who bewitches men. While Barbara Stanwyck, as Phyllis Dietrichson, one of cinema's most subversive femmes fatales, and Diane Tremayne, played by Jean Simmons in "Angel Face", will remain the most subversive of all.

Thanks to his beginnings on Broadway, he had made it to Hollywood, where his personality was remarkably changed. Since he was married and had a deaf child when he met Katherine Hepburn, he did not dare to file for divorce.

A free star of Hollywood, as was the legendary actress Katharine Hepburn. Unique and unrivalled, Katharine Hepburn baffled Holywood and its times with her non-conformist spirit. And yet the woman who was once dubbed "box-office poison" went on to win 4 Oscars, a record. This excerpt looks back at her debut in Hollywood. And right from the start, she imposed her style and her ideas. Her films reflect her independence, as she wore pants throughout her life, even though they were considered indecent for a woman in those days. Through her films, she tried to change moral standards. Sylvia Scarlett, Mornin Glory and Bringing up Baby, portrayed egotistical, androgynous women far removed from the standards of the time.

Visionary architect Daniel Libeskind (* May 12th, 1946) has succeeded in transforming himself from a writer, theorist, and lecturer in architecture, to a constructor of major building projects around the world. Since his first major commission in 1987, he has won many international competitions to design high-profile public buildings.
This program looks at Libeskind’s work, focusing on the Jewish Museum in Berlin, one of his most important achievements, in which he used his powerful architectural language to express and process the trauma of the Holocaust and exile. It also touches on his artistic controversies - London's debate over The Spiral as well as his radical extension to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Other projects by Libeskind include the Imperial War Museum in Manchester, a concert hall in Bremen, Germany, the Jewish Museum in San Francisco, a University building in Guadalajara, Mexico, and an observatory in Uozu, Japan. He also served as an advisor on the planning of One World Trade Center 8which opened in 2014) and is currently working on the creation of the Albert Einstein Discovery Center in Ulm.
The dynamic and complex buildings Libeskind designs, bear the hallmark of his approach to architecture in which he seeks to give concrete form to philosophical ideas and to make meaningful connections with the past. Over and above his genius for producing buildings that are as expressive as abstract sculptures, this intellectual concern brings an extra dimension to his work that sets him apart from many of his contemporaries. Among the contributors to the film are colleagues and family, including his father, a survivor of the Holocaust.

Behind the glitter, all was not always rosy in Hollywood. The Great Depression that hit America in the late 20s was a way for the major studios to cut production costs, despite ever-increasing profits. Writers, actors and technicians, everyone was affected. That's when Hollywood employees decided to go on strike and form unions to defend their rights against the Big Five. This led, in 1933, to the creation of the Screen Actor Guild, which still exists today, and which is currently defending its rights, which are becoming increasingly precarious in the age of streaming. The union was supported by Hollywood greats such as James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and Katharine Hepburn.

In the heart of Mumbai lives Sheikh Rehman, the city's last painter of film posters. His studio is run in the old masters' style – behind the screen of an old Hindi film cinema. Here, Rehman is both artist and guru, comedian and philosopher. But modernity is taking over and the audiences that have come in for generations for refuge and entertainment are dwindling. With the theatre facing potential demolition, marketing has turned to more plastic movie posters to lure in more people, replacing the need for Rehman’s original work. It’s a hopeless struggle but Rehman won’t give up …
ORIGINAL COPY is a delightful ode to life and the cinema. As Rehman says, movies are like life: "The reel keeps rolling, and the movie goes on."

In the heart of Mumbay, in Kamathipura district, a traditional Hindi cinema is run by a woman. Still too rare in a country where women live in insecurity and lack of consideration. In fact, her grandfather, who owned the cinema Alfred Cinema Hall, had no intention of passing it on to his granddaughter. Nonsense in a society where family pride is based on a daughter's marriage, rather than on her education and professional future.
And yet, for the woman who was nurtured from an early age by Bollywood cinema, becoming the manager of this temple of cinema was always an obvious choice. In fact, her life is like that of a heroine in a Hindi film by Satyajit Ray, beyond women's familiar images: an impulsive, determined woman, the driving force behind the emancipation of women who love her work. She carefully checks all the films released in her cinema, taking care to show mainly action films appreciated by her audience. Here, films are projected on 35mm. Alfred talkies is one of Mumbai’s most atmospheric theatres. However, as well as having to deal with the injustices against women, the manager also has to face up to the economic upheavals affecting cinemas and the sometimes vicious competition between them.

In intimate conversations Wim Wenders talks about his sheltered upbringing in post-war Germany. The film follows him on a journey into the past that takes him to Paris, where he lived as a young painter and made his decision to become a filmmaker. He recounts his experiences, successes and failures as a film student on the way to becoming a director. He also conveys the attitudes and the euphoric mood among the first intake of students at Munich’s newly founded film school. Apart from Wenders himself, some of his most important fellow-travellers also have their say, including Peter Handke, Robby Müller, Rüdiger Vogler, Bruno Ganz and Lisa Kreuzer. As they remember, they discuss some of the fundamental, recurring themes of Wenders’ films – such as the search for identity, friendship and communication. They also discuss their own personal experiences with Wenders, both private and professional.
Excerpts from Wenders’ early works like "Alice in the city", Kings of the road and "Wrong Move", illustrate how, time and again, the filmmaker portrayed familar people he knew and authentic experiences. The early films of Wim Wenders are now regarded as landmarks of European film and were the foundations of the German New Wave. his road trilogy embodies themes that became cornerstones of all his work: national identity, the importance of personal relationships and the allure of the road.
This is just one of the ways in which this documentary sheds new light on the early films of Wim Wenders.

In Zanzibar they play it at the end of weddings, in Romania at the end of funerals, in Mexico as a protest song, and in Germany as a sailor’s lament. Written a century and a half ago by Sebastián Iradier and first performed in Cuba, “La Paloma”—the most frequently played song in the world—has circled the globe like a dove to touch listeners’ hearts with longing. La Paloma is recognizable by its song's rhythm, which defines the style of the habanera, a popular music genre in the 19th century. But Jazz artists, opera singers, pop stars, and others raced to perform the song--even Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Frankie Laine or Harry Belafonte.
Drawing upon insightful expert commentary, moving personal anecdotes, and snippets from dozens of versions of “La Paloma,” this program follows the song’s trail in an effort to understand its power to enchant so very many people. A mix of music history and ethnomusicology to tells the story of this popular song, which through the history has carried divergent messages and signification. Music thus has the ability to cross ages and borders, and to resonate differently in different cultures.

After many years of deliberate criminal neglect, Jaffa has been rediscovered as a coveted investment opportunity. The film follows the personal struggle of the veteran residents against the threat of eviction orders and reveals the metamorphosis that the city is going through, uncovering both its social and political meanings.
Close to Tel Aviv and on the shores of the Mediterranean, the value of the land is rising exuberantly, resulting in extreme high rent for hundreds of families who have lived here for generations.
Simultaneously, governmental institutions are carrying out brutal evictions while the profits are exclusively enjoyed by the developers and the state.
A Guide to Gentrification shows all the fans of Jaffa the price its residents have to pay for beauty and location.

Francophone West Africa is bound together by the french language and a common currency. But also by traditions and languages from the vast empiresthat dominated the region long before colonialism. In Burkina Faso the name and speeches of the iconic Thomas Sankara is used by musicians to protestagainst injustices and corruption. In Benin, the veterans of Orchestre Polyrytmo give a historic background to the music scene of today. Francophone West Africa has a very diverse and rich music scene due to its different ethnicities and the mixture of cultures that has taken place throughout its history. there is a hip-hop scene very present in Burkina Faso, a scene mixing afrobeat and traditional music with Voodoo Funk, but also a Tuareg music mixing rock, blues and traditional Tuareg music in Mali.
In Burkina Faso, which remains one of the poorest countries in Africa, the legacy of Thomas Sankara permeates the current music scene through hip-hop. Through hip-hop, the artists convey committed songs denouncing the political situation of the country and the blatant social inequalities. It is in this context that Waga Hip-Hop was born, one of the most popular musical genres in Burkina Faso.
Through this documentary, we meet many West African artists including: Kossi Apeson, Rokia Traoré, Tinariwen, Smarty, Orchestre Polyrytmo and many more.

Senegal, on the western tip of Africa, has been a cultural crossroads for ages. Today the capital Dakar is the unrivalled centre for the West African hip hopscene. Taking it's influences from, Paris, New york as well as local sources, the hip hop movement has shaped the political history of Senegal. Music in Senegal is rooted in the daily life and political upheavals of the country. The Senegalese music scene experienced a real revolution under the presidency of the poet Leopold Sédar Senghor, who led a policy promoting the local and cultural identity of the Senegalese. It is in this context that was born the most listened and popular musical style of Senegal, Mbalax. A musical style influenced by Wolof culture and drums, pioneered by Youssou N'dour. Music is a way in this West African country to assert a cultural identity specific to the country, which wants to be independent from Europe or the United States.
In addition, Senegal meets another important musical wave with the rap, of which it becomes one of the biggest scenes of the continent. Rappers have turned rap into an instrument of counter-power in this country with a turbulent political history. Rap conveys political messages, a way to educate people and to incite them to vote. Rap constitutes as a counter power, mirror views of the new generation. Influenced above all by the Burkinabe political icon, Thomas Sankara, music in Senegal seeks to change the system and daily life by asserting a self-reliant and independent African identity.
Through this documentary, we meet many Senegalese artists including: Youssou N'dour, Carlou D, Didier Awadi, Sister Fa, Daara J and many more

Let's go to South Africa to discover its vibrant music scene. The South African music scene is influenced by a rich cultural heritage. Although it is the richest country on the African continent, South Africa is scarred by its social and economic inequalities and is struggling to come to terms with the racist heritage from the apartheid era. In fact, the music still bears the stigma of apartheid, it is a translation of the struggle of black South Africans for equality and freedom. Music is a way to assert their identity, their cultural identity and to promote it.

Elliot Erwitt explains how the photo of Nixon and Khrushchev, in a vitriolic conversation among the pavilions of a trade show, became the symbol of the Cold War.
Elliot Erwitt, one of the most famous photographers, is best known for his emotional photographs. Influenced by Cartier-Bresson, Erwitt looks for the marvelous in normality, his photos manage to create iconic works from the banality of everyday life. His photos are also recognizable by their great sarcasm and irony.
For him the secret of a good photo is luck, which is extremely important for any photographer.
In 1953 he joined Magnum Photos as a press photographer. Long before these photos full of playfulness and insolence, Erwitt was a great photographer documenting the conflicts of his time, including the Cold War. One of his photos for the American press made history by covering the military parade celebrating the anniversary of the October Revolution in the Soviet Union. He showed the western bloc the technological advance of the Soviets with the parade of missiles.
Richard Nixon and Nikita Chruschtschow. But Erwitt will make history again with his photos of the Kitchen Debate between Richard Nixon and Nikita Chruschtschow, depicting the surprising confrontation of the Western and Eastern bloc.
Erwitt is also known for his portraits of famous people, such as Marilyn Monroe, whom he photographed during private sessions, but also Jacky Kennedy at the funeral of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. One of his most tragic photos is precisely Jacky Kennedy all in black and most disarming face in front of her husband's coffin.
Erwitt also discovered a passion for wildlife photography, particularly canine photography. His most amusing photos are precisely those of dogs, including the very elegant ones in Central Park. He finds dogs quite sympathetic and uncomplicated and they don't mind to be photographied, which is a good reason to photograph them

Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia, revealed by the irreverent look of Bruce Gilden. The photographer that made of the road his main inspiration. Bruce Gilden, a kid of Brooklyn, has always had a fascination for people outside the norm. His childhood imagination was bewitched by gangsters, street people, boxers, and the like. His photos will reflect precisely these people of the margin, to whom he finds a beauty, and perceives as his fellow men.
Street photography was therefore an obvious choice, it shows the raw reality, the most authentic that is. He sees an infinite combination in street photography. His famous close-up captures the human condition.
Member of Magnum Photos since 1998, his appetite for the law of the street and the ascent of urban life, will lead him to Japan where he will be one of the first to document the Japanese underground but especially the daily life of the Japanese mafia, the Yakuzas.
He will manage to gain their trust and let themselves be photographed, especially thanks to his experience of the street world, he does not ask questions, does not try to be curious. He observes, looks and shoots. His photos are not only visually stunning, but authenticate the world of organized crime of the Yakuza, whether its hierarchical system or tattoos sign of allegiance to the Yakuza, as the rituals. He was fascinated by the duality and double lives of the individuals.

German photographer Thomas Hoepker, reveals the story behind one of the most iconic pictures in the history of sports: the portrait of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
Thomas Hoepker was born in Germany, where he moved around a lot during his childhood, the family following his father, journalist. he discovered his passion for art and especially for photography when his grandfather gave him his first camera. he later studied art history and became a journalist.
His photos document the hustle and bustle of his time, the 60s and 70s. A proponent of honest photojournalism, he photographed the major events and personalities of the international scene such as Andy Warhol. His style is recognizable at first glance, with bright colors and rich tones.
As a journalist, he applies himself to photographing and capturing everyday situations.
His departure for the United States in the 1960s was a journey of discovery and exploration for him where he shaped his photographic style. And it was also the starting point of one of his greatest encounters, that with The Greatest, Muhammad Ali.
Right away, Ali attracts his attention, he finds behind the champion's stature an interesting and a bit strange man. Ali, then Olympic gold medalist and world champion, is the center of attention in America. Thomas Hoepker leaves for Chicago to follow the boxing champion in his daily life, and to photograph both his private and public life. He tells the story of his meeting with Ali, who recently converted to Islam. Hoepker photographs the most famous and iconic pictures of the boxer during his trips with Ali. He shares with the American people moments from Ali's life, photos of a rare honesty and authenticity that characterizes Hoepker's style. We discover Ali far from the ring, surrounded by his family, but also his militant side. In a racist America of the 60's, where segregation is still in place, Ali fights against racism and inequalities alongside Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. He captured also intimate moment such as the blossoming of his love for his future third wife, Bellinda, waitress at a bakery store at the time.
After his report on Ali, Thomas Hoepker continued his exploration of American society, through images of routine daily life, photos resembling Edward Hopper's paintings with those faces full of solitude.

Fascinated by the still image since his first encounter with cinema as a child, Guy Le Querrec taught himself photography before becoming one of the most recognized photographers of his generation. Fascinated by Africa, where he first worked for the newspaper "La Jeune Afrique", Le Querrec formed his style. He photographed remote tribes. He describes himself as an image fisherman "Pêcheur d'image", he tats the ground, not knowing what he will find, he discovers on the spot what can attract his curiosity. For him, photography prevents us from forgetting, it has the power to remind us of a moment, a memory, like Proust's madeleine.
One of his most beautiful encounters was with the great jazz musician Miles Davis, whom he photographed on multiple occasions, such as during the Marciac Jazz Festival in the south of France. His photos reflect the huge charisma of the legendary trumpeter, the black and white of his photos intensifies the aristocratic and royal figure of the Prince of Darkness. At the end of the 60's, Miles Davis was the leader of modern jazz. He experimented and marked a new turning point in his career by inserting electronic modulation into his music. The celebrity of Miles Davis in the 60's equals that of the rock stars.
In his recent work, Le Querrec is interested in Brittany's landscapes and culture, in people in their daily lives.

Steve McCurry tells of 9/11, as he watched it through the lens of his camera, taking pictures from the roof of his house in Washington Square. His reportage is the incredible testimony of the terrible moments after the fall. Becoming a member of Magnum Photos Agency in 1986, Steve McCurry has covered the many armed conflicts, the Afghan Civil War, the Cambodian Civil War, the Gulf War among others. His entire works documents the effects of globalization and the fate of mankind.
His photos are recognizable at first glance, with his works of a striking color due to a low contrast, giving his photos a lot of emotions. This is precisely the case with his most famous photo, the Afghan girl, whose eyes captivate by their brilliance. A mysterious figure, she is the Mona Lisa of photography. A face that no one can forget. He takes many risk throughout his career to inform the world of the most tragic events, but most of all to show the similarity between people, the human connection between all of us.
However the event that marked him the most was 9/11, his city and especially the Wolrd Trade Center, symbol of New York, were hit. Present in New York when the Twin Towers were destroyed, Steve McCurry photographed the September 11 attacks. His photos show the extent of the disaster, the enormous site of destruction, the people agard and those looking for survivors. For him, photography is a way to freeze time and history in the making. The photos burn in the memory, attesting to a moment marked forever in the minds. He is a frequent contributor to National Geographic.

The attack to the American Embassy in Tehran is the key event of the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The photo of Abbas synthesizes contradictions and hopes of Iranian people.
Abbas described himself as a photographer of the outside, he became never the other, he took photos, then he left. A born photographer, he had a remarquable ability to capture mankind and its contradiction. His work focuses on faith and fanaticism, particularly in Islam and Buddhism.
But Abbas' most famous photographs come from the Iranian Revolution in 1979. He covered the tumultuous events in his country. He knew there was something in the air, because there was too much tension and too much progress, so he wanted to do some in-depth work on Iran.
He captured the hostage crisis in Iran with the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
Abbas observed the dynamics of his country, recounting every detail with a critical eye, as he did in South Africa to cover apartheid and the Vietnam War in the Vietcong, where few photojournalists covered the events. In retrospect, he decrisbed himself as a historian of the present and was his mission to show these pictures now to the world.
What he was looking for in each of his photos was the suspended moment, to give the feeling that the photo is not frozen but continues to live. The captured moment continues its action.

A lonely man facing Chinese tanks on Tiananmen Square is often described as the most famous photo of the 20th century. Stuart Franklin led us to the 5th of June 1989, when the unknown rioter faced the regime. Joining Magnum Photos in 1985, Stuart Franklin became a full member in 1989. In the same year, Franklin photographed the uprising in Tiananmen Square and shot one of the Tank Man photographs, first published in TIME Magazine, as well as widely documenting the uprising in Beijing earning him a World Press Photo Award. In fact, joining Magnum Photo was an obvious choice for Franklin, because of the photographer's right to ownership of his work, but also because of the critical spirit at the center of the famous photo agency's editorial line. The Magnum photographer studied at Oxford at the Faculty of Photography.
During the interview, Franklin explains us how he photographied this famous and tragic photography of this courageous man facing the tanks, symbol of the violent repression of the Chinese government.
After covering the Tiananmen Square protests, Stuart Franklin has continued to catch the conflicts of the world, like the famine, war or ecological issue. His work shows his ethic, and personal vision, which pushes him to have a better theoretical understanding of global issues. For him phtography is way to grasp a reality, a given moment and to question it. In this sense, his recent work focuses on the environment and climate change. Through landscape photographs, Franklin questions mankind and his ability to determine the future of the planet.
His work has been published by numerous global publications including National Geographic, The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Harper’s Magazine.
