In this video, we take a first look at the rare British Cold War Gamma Radiation Monitor Type 1030C, manufactured by British Physical Laboratories, Radlett. Very little information survives on these fascinating instruments, making them a real mystery and an exciting piece of British nuclear history.
We carefully open the monitor and make a remarkable discovery, the original batteries were still installed inside after many decades! To protect the instrument, the batteries have now been removed, bagged and safely stored, as they form part of the history of this unique item.
Research into the Type 1030C is continuing, and we’ve even contacted the Science Museum regarding their own example in the hope of uncovering manuals and technical documentation.
