Is what #bviral doing legal? Last month I had my Facebook frozen by @BVIRAL and their partner #IPSHIELD who also go under the name of #SocialCoaster. They demanded $1000 to release my page despite the clip I had used had been given to me by the original creator Mohsin Rajaa to use for free. I explained that he gave me permission but they stood firm that without paying them I would not have my page restored. This stopped my fundraising for Sky’s Wolf Sanctuary right in its tracks, we are literally right now trying to raise money by July to stop her losing the land for her wolves.
I researched the internet and found forums on Reddit left by people who had experienced similar situations, where #bviral had also struck their page holding them ransom for money.
I researched facebook’s policies and found out that they could be breaking some of facebooks rules.
This scenario is known as extortion via predatory DMCA takedowns. Bad actors use Meta’s Rights Manager tool to strike your page, take down your content, and then message you privately or direct you to an external website demanding a “fee” or ransom to retract the strike.
Meta explicitly bans this behavior through several cross-enforced policies, but because the extortion happens off-platform, you must handle the situation carefully to avoid getting scammed.
The Rules Meta Uses to Ban These Companies
Meta does not need to see the external website to punish the company; they punish them based on how they used the tool on Facebook.
The exact protocols violated are:
The Anti-Extortion and Ransom Policy: Under Meta’s Community Standards on Fraud and Deception, users are strictly prohibited from using Meta’s infrastructure to orchestrate a financial scam or coerce financial gain under the threat of digital harm (like losing your page).
Bad-Faith Material Misrepresentation: Under Section 1.3 of the Meta Rights Manager Terms, companies swear under penalty of perjury that they own the content they are striking. Falsely claiming content to force an off-platform negotiation is an immediate contractual breach.
