Buzz Feiten - 1973 vintage live recording of Buzz Feiten at the Village Pizza - Siesta Key - Sarasota, FL. Buzz Feiten, guitar player extraordinaire and inventor of the Buzz Feiten Tuning System. Buzz was visiting his friend, and fellow band mate, Neil Larsen in Sarasota, FL back in the Summer of 1973. They set up shop in a casual, funky beach bar/pizzeria, called Village Pizza, that was located in Siesta Village, Siesta Key directly behind the legendary Beach Club. I had some technical issues with my classic Wollensak Reel-to-Reel tape recorder, and by the time they were resolved Neil Larsen was no longer at the sessions. In the video, that needs some explaining, you will see a couple of photos that include Neil Larsen on the Fender Rhodes along with Billy Burke on bass and Sonny Abelardo on drums. These photos were taken at the Village Pizza, Siesta Key, Sarasota of this 1973 jam session. Thanks to Burt Engelsman (a mighty fine bass player himself) for providing these photos. Also, thanks to Steve Lake for providing the photo of Neil Larsen and his lovely wife taken just a couple of weeks ago at Steve Cochran's annual Christmas bash here in Sarasota, FL. I needed something to fill up video space to go with the sound track so along with the pictures of the band I tapped into my vintage postcard collection of Sarasota and also used photos of legendary Sarasota artists, writers, music producers, and performers who have called Sarasota and Siesta Key home. Everything in the video is representative of Sarasota, so that is the theme. Some of the local Sarasota artists represented are Syd Solomon, Beth Arthur, Robert Chase, Ben Stahl, Robert Larsen, Tom Snow, Eric VonSmidt, Jon Corbino, Thorton Utz, Jerry Wexler, Emmitt Kelly (Weary Willy), Richy Kicklighter and others. The quality of some of the photos is severely lacking, but it's really about the music anyway. This is still some of the finest guitar playing I have ever heard. The attack, the tone, the chops, the phrasing... it's all there and it is why Buzzy's sound is instantly recognizable and what sets the true greats apart. More to come later.
