Big Bend Coal & Clay #2 is a 33-ton 0-4-0 tank engine made by Vulcan Iron Works in 1925. It runs on standard gauge track with a boiler pressure of 190 P.S.I. The plan is to restore it in order to pull small excursions and give people an opportunity to learn how to run a steam locomotive in Western Canada. This locomotive was stored only a short drive away from where I grew up near Strome Alberta, but it was moved to Devon AB about 10 years ago where it had sat until I purchased it in the fall of 2024. Ethan Harty (owner of Harty Locomotive Works) is a blacksmith from Alberta, Canada. He started forging at age 11 and studied the “Tools to Make Tools” curriculum under Alec Steele at age 13 in Norfolk, UK. Some of his noteworthy honours in forging include being a demonstrator at Canada’s national blacksmithing conference (CanIRON), a demonstrator for the Texas Blacksmithing Conference, and teaching a tool making class at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT College) at age 16. In his forging company, his clients range from beginner blacksmiths, to the Calgary Stampede, to B.C. Hydo. He also has a prime interest in antique equipment of all kinds and is a certified steam power-engineer in Alberta.
