Retaining walls are essential for supporting soil and preventing erosion. Two common types are buttressed and counterfort retaining walls, but what’s the difference?

✅ Buttressed Retaining Wall

Supports are on the front (exposed side).
Buttresses reduce bending stress in the stem.
Used where additional lateral support is needed.

✅ Counterfort Retaining Wall

Supports are at the back, hidden within the soil.
Counterforts act as tension elements, reducing bending moments.
More commonly used in large-scale applications due to better stability.

💡 Tip for Engineers: Choosing the right type depends on aesthetics, structural efficiency, and soil conditions.
