Although he smiled and emoted very broadly in several of his first film appearances alongside Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Buster Keaton soon realized that he got more laughs whenever he played things completely deadpan. He became known as "The Great Stone Face" for many years, refusing to ever smile onscreen. After his career hit the skids when MGM fired him, Buster, in the midst of an alcoholic bender, made this film in France and finally smiled onscreen.
