In this episode, world renowned vocal coach Kevin Richards explains why normal singing and belting do not require different amounts of air.

More air = more volume - but that's NOT what belting is all about. A vocal belt is about compression and resonance. Belt singing DOES NOT need to be loud to sound huge. The intensity of a sound comes from its resonance and cord closure.
