The Llanos (=the Plains) is a vast tropical grassland plain situated to the east of the Andes in Colombia and Venezuela, in northwestern South America. It is an ecoregion of the tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome. This region is known for its seasonal floods. Therefore, the owls choose the higher grounds to build their nests. My guide told me that this is why the first settlers in the Llanos often built their houses next to the owls.
