A walk though downtown Charleston after dark reveals light from strange places in "light" of the fact that the ocean is very close and flooding and hurricanes are a regular occurrence. Additionally, it's also said that no power tools or bulldozers were available at the time to dig these huge subterranean basements even if it were a good idea. Just as many large old homes nearby are said to have been built UP from the ground to avoid the water exposure that comes regularly. So that leaves one to wonder... which is it? Houses on stilts or buildings with basements?... all within a block of each other. Mudflood theorists consider that all the homes and buildings started at the same level which is now subterranean, but has been covered up by a cataclysmic flood of mud creating a new ground level.
