Burials of Ancient Christian Kings found in Africa.In the highlands of Ethiopia, the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela represent a pinnacle of medieval Christian devotion, with symbolic burials echoing biblical sites, including the claims to ancient Christian kings of Africa, replicas of the Tomb of Christ and the Tomb of Adam carved directly into the rock within the northern cluster of churches. The most notable royal burial tradition attributes the tomb of Saint King Lalibela himself (r. 1181–1221) to Bete Golgotha (House of Golgotha), a sacred space adorned with relief carvings of saints and containing a cloth-draped feature revered as his resting place, reflecting his saintly status in Ethiopian Orthodoxy. These subterranean sanctuaries also house graves of pilgrims and monks in rock chambers, underscoring Lalibela's role as a living pilgrimage site, though no extensive necropolis of multiple ancient kings exists here unlike pre-Christian Axumite stelae burials.
