TAX WARS takes us behind the scenes of a global battle against the tax evasion of multinational companies, a battle that is needed in order to provide governments with the means to combat inequalities, fund neglected public services and address climate change, both in the Global North and the Global South.
At the forefront of this fight are a handful of experts, the "knights of tax justice" – Thomas Piketty, Joseph Stiglitz, Gabriel Zucman, Jayati Ghosh, Eva Joly and others – who join forces in the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT). The film tells the story of how they succeeded in asserting their ideas in the face of the most powerful actors of the global economy, culminating in the adoption of a landmark agreement in 2021 signed by 136 countries on a minimum tax on the profits of multinationals.
