Ten traditional boatbuilders spent over 20 months on a tiny island outside Haugesund, combining Old Norse saga accounts with archaeological findings to recreate a 35-meter-long, 7.5-meter-wide ocean-going dragon ship. This footage documents the exact clinker-building techniques passed down since the Viking Age.
Key construction milestones shown in this video:
Stretching the massive oak keel and alignment of the stern and stem sections using large clamps and iron rivets.
The clinking process requires approximately 100 hammer strokes per iron nail to secure the overlapping hull planks.
Fitting the lower ribs and bottom bands with custom wooden nails to evenly distribute ocean forces across the hull.
Using natural materials like pine tar and raw hemp string as a traditional sealant between the wooden strakes.
Selecting a solid root of oak to hand-carve the iconic dragon head and tail sections.
Creating structural longitudinal strength using specialized midship stringers to prevent extreme hull flexing in rough water.
The result of this meticulous labor is a highly flexible, authentic clinker-built ship designed for a crew of 100 men to row and sail in open ocean conditions.
