Professor Marco Giometto’s Environmental Flow Physics Lab’s research activities are devoted to the study of flow phenomena involving turbulence, heat transfer, and evaporation, which are ubiquitous in nature and engineering. The lab develops predictive computational frameworks and derives rigorous yet clean mathematical theories describing fundamental mechanisms supporting mass, energy and momentum transport in complex flows.
The research advances the current understanding of nature and of engineering systems, and supports the development of effective policies to improve our interaction with the environment.

“The goal is to advance our ability to create weather and climate predictions with microscale accuracy. And we do this by combining field measurements and digital models. Sensor measurements provide very accurate data, but they're typically sparse in space. On the other hand, the digital models are more inaccurate, but they provide the information at every location you might want in space.
And as part of this project, we aim at fusing data and models to take advantage of strength of both parts. In particular, we're planning to develop data simulation algorithms that allow to basically blend the data into the models and calibrate model parameters so that we improve the accuracy of the models.
Here what you're seeing is a set of meteorological stations that we're deploying at the Lamont campus with the goal of obtaining those parts, especially distributed measurements. We'll then build a so-called digital twin of the atmosphere above the campus. This is essentially a digital model resolving wind, temperature and humidity. And we'll assimilate these measurements into the model to drive it so that it resembles as close as possible the station measurements."
