I'm a huge Avatar: The Last Airbender fan, and as a woodworker who specializes in kumiko — traditional Japanese woodworking — I wanted to build something that honored both. This is a full-scale, wall-hanging recreation of Aang's glider, featuring hand-cut kumiko wings with a custom pattern I designed to represent Aang himself.
In this video, I cover the entire build process: shaping the sapele staff and arms, bent-laminating the curves out of western red cedar, cutting and assembling over a hundred pieces of kumiko by hand, and finishing it all to hang as a wall art piece.
