Memories of rolling a VW Beetle inspires me to build a camber compensator for the swing axle suspension on the Renobug.
In a VW Beetle with a swing axle, the camber compensator's primary function is to minimize or eliminate wheel lift during cornering and improve ride quality. It achieves this by applying an upward force to the outer wheel as the car turns, preventing it from tucking under and maintaining tire contact. This also helps improve steering response and reduce body roll. The following benefits are gained:
Reducing Wheel Lift:
The swing axle design of early VW Beetles allowed the rear wheels to move independently, which, in turns, could cause the outer wheel to lift off the ground due to the force exerted on the axle. The camber compensator counteracts this, keeping the outer wheel in contact with the road.
Improving Ride Quality:
By preventing wheel lift, the compensator helps to maintain a more stable and predictable ride, particularly during turns.
Improving Steering Response:
The reduced wheel lift and overall suspension stability contribute to a more precise and responsive steering feel.
Controlling Body Roll:
The camber compensator can also help to reduce body roll, making the car feel more stable and less prone to pitch and yaw.
With all that said, let's build it!😎
