At this point, we are almost at the end. My wife and I struggled to decide on what knobs to put on the doors. We have these beautiful, cast brass drawer pulls that I will mount flush, but we couldn't find knobs that added to the look without calling a lot of attention to themselves.
Then, one evening, I was thinking about ways I could diy something we already had, and I thought about replacing the ceramic "button" on some ulgy old brass knobs I had in the shop. The button came out easy enough with a few hammer blows, and then I just had to fit some walnut into the recess. That went so quickly and smoothly, and the result was so cool, that I knew we had found the solution.
The process is basically trial and error; there's not a ton of skill involved. I will say, however, that if you make the inlay double the thickness, or more, you can make "book matched" inlays across the knobs, which I did for the middle two.
Of course, if you have a lathe, this is quite simple.
But even if you don't, the process is quite accessible with some fiddling and an attention to detail.
