Learning how to build a primitive bow and arrows isn't difficult. In this survival bow building video I'll demonstrate how to make a pacific Yew self bow using essentially nothing but a bowie knife. I'll also make a sinew bow string and primitive wood stain and sealer from birch tar rendered from birch bark. Although this isn't intended as a primitive bow building tutorial, if you want to learn how to make a bow and arrows, you're bound to pick up some valuable selfbow building tips and tricks. I harvested this yew bow stave several years ago and let it cure in my barn rafters. I cut the stave with an axe, split it with antler wedges, then complete the primitive bow build with only a large knife. This is the complete bow building process, start to finish. Primitive bow making is a fantastic bushcraft survival skill you can practice over the winter months. This particular stave cured for several years but there are other species, like elm, hickory, serviceberry, etc. that you can go cut right now and begin work without the long drying times.
