I build a mountain bike starting with a Cannondale F500 frame that I bought at a local bike co-op for $40. The bike was originally 24 speed (3 x 8), but I update it to 27 speed (3 x 9).

The bottom bracket was a cartridge, so I didn't overhaul that. I may still replace the crankset.
