I built a low frequency microphone using a 10" Keller maple shell and a 7" speaker, inspired by the old studio trick of using a speaker as a mic for capturing the very lowest end of a bass drum.
Materials used:
10" Keller maple shell with speaker mount
6x drum lugs
Tom mount
XLR socket
7" speaker (used or new, smaller/larger also possible, I chose 7" as it matches the classic Yamaha NS10 driver size used in many studios)
1x mesh head & 1x resonant head
Foam for damping
This setup allows you to capture those deep, chest-rumbling low frequencies that a regular kick mic often misses. It’s a fun DIY project, not too complicated, and you can adapt it to the parts you already have.
Let me know what you think and if you’ve built something similar, I’d love to hear about your experience!
