Nearly 40 years after the introduction of the NES, it turns out we can build a brand new one here in 2025 using a kit called the SM-Tendo. Not only that but it has enhanced features like the removal of the CIC lockout chip and the inclusion of Expansion Audio. Add to the mix other great kits like the Nintendrawer and the PPUdigitizer which gives us crisp, HDMI level video output, and we have a NES that’s better than the original. And to cherry on top is that it’s pretty easy to do, so let’s dive in and see what making a new NES in 2025 is like.
