Thankfully, that part isn’t real—but bugs in the ear actually do happen, and it’s something otolaryngologists, or ENT doctors, treat all the time.
When a live insect gets into the ear canal, the first step is usually to stop it from moving. Doctors often place mineral oil, lidocaine, or alcohol into the ear. This quickly kills or immobilizes the insect, which prevents painful scratching of the ear canal or eardrum.
Next, using specialized tools and a microscope, the ENT carefully removes the bug. This might be done with tiny forceps, suction, or gentle irrigation depending on the situation.
The good news?
In most cases, once the bug is removed, the ear heals quickly with little or no long-term damage.
So if you ever feel buzzing, scratching, or sudden pain in your ear… it might not be mind control like Peter’s—but it’s definitely time to see an ENT.
