As you travel along the Bitter Springs Trail Back Country Byway, you will encounter an area known as Buffington Pockets. A "pocket" refers to a shallow erosional basin in the sandstone that can hold rainwater. Also called tinajas (from the Spanish word for "jar"), these basins were crucial for both wildlife and human travelers.
The dam in the area is believed to date back to the early 20th century. More recently, a large depiction of an owl in flight has been painted on its downstream face. The canyon above the dam features petroglyphs, adding to the area's cultural significance.
If you plan to visit, be aware that a 4x4 vehicle with high clearance will be required. Please respect the area and follow Leave No Trace principles. The petroglyphs are irreplaceable; refrain from touching, tracing, or defacing them. Photography is welcome, but leave only footprints behind.
